This wonderful lodge-based trek explores the spectacular world of the Annapurna Himal, one of the most culturally rich and intensely scenic areas of Nepal. We’ve crafted a trek that grants superb views of the mountains (so close they seem within arm’s reach) as you hike from one lodge to the next under the gaze of mighty Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Machapuchare, and other soaring, ice-clad peaks. And it’s all at a comfortable elevation—no higher than 7,300 feet! Our cozy mountain lodges are perfectly positioned to take full advantage of the amazing views. After our trek, you’ll head to Temple Tree Resort and Spa, a wonderful retreat near Phewa Lake in the Pokhara Valley, an ideal spot to relax after our exhilarating adventure.

Days 1-2
Kathmandu

Kathmandu’s intriguing sights include Bodhnath, a 1,400-year-old stupa attracting pilgrims from across Buddhist Asia, and Pashupatinath, a riverside Hindu temple with cremation ghats (steps) and wandering sadhus (holy men).

Days 3-9
Annapurna Foothills

Trek In the foothills of the Annapurnas, our lodge-to-lodge trek brings you through picturesque mountain hamlets, neatly terraced fields, and lush rhododendron forests, with the snowy summits of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machapuchare gleaming beneath the cobalt-blue sky. In Ghandruk, with its maze of cobbled lanes and Gurung hill people, an Exploration Day allows you to meet the villagers and learn about their traditions and customs. Our lodge here is an idyllic setting from which to enjoy sunrise over the snow-clad mountains—an unforgettable sight. Continuing higher, we may pass donkey and mule caravans on trail, which convey goods to and from the Gurung settlements. All along the way, you’ll experience the magic of the Himalaya while staying in cozy lodges that offer stupendous mountain views as well as easy access to nearby villages. Private rooms feature comfortable beds with linens, blankets, and pillows, solar-heated showers, and en suite bathrooms. Our return trek leads through wooded hillsides and terraced farmlands to the floor of the Pokhara Valley, where our stay at Temple Tree Resort and Spa caps our extraordinary adventure.

Days 10-12
Kathmandu

Return to Kathmandu with a day to explore this lively city before departing on Day 12 (or join one of our exciting extensions).

What the Trip is Like

This trip is rated Level 4, Moderate to Strenuous, according to our trip rating system. We have five hiking days, hiking approximately 3-6 hours a day (6 to 8 miles). All hiking takes place at altitudes below 7,300 feet, but there is a good bit of up-and down, including sections of steep, stone staircases on moderate to steep trails. The Annapurna foothills are criss-crossed by an ancient network of hand-built steps that lead up and down between villages. You might want to bring a hiking pole, if you like to use one.  For the most part, you can go at your own speed. The group spreads out along the trail during the day, with our guides hiking along with us to make sure that everyone finds the way. There is ample opportunity for exploring the villages and beautiful surroundings and, of course, for photography.

Even though you carry only a daypack (with camera, jacket, rain gear, water bottle, and other small necessities you may need while on the trail), we recommend you make a special effort to get in top physical shape for the trip. Daily brisk walking and/or regular hiking (or using a stair-climbing machine at your gym) are excellent preparatory exercises. Anyone in good health who enjoys hiking should find this trek enjoyable.

Each morning, after an early breakfast, we set out at about 8:30 am, stopping mid-morning for a rest. We continue trekking until our lunch stop around midday. The trails are winding and well worn, but are generally in good condition. Along the way there is plenty of time to stop and photograph the breathtaking Himalayan backdrop, and to explore the countryside. Following lunch, we continue along to our next lodge accommodation. We usually arrive at the lodge by around 3:00 pm, with happy hour and snacks before dinner at 6:00 pm.
