Highlights
- Dramatic total solar eclipse at sea with one minute and thirty-one seconds of totality, close to the maximum for this eclipse!
- Among the best weather prospects on the eclipse path, with the safety, reliability, comfort, and maneuverability of the intimate expedition ship Corinthian
- Astronomer Dr. Rick Fienberg and West Africa experts Dr. Christine Drake and Dr. Deborah Mack enhance the journey with their expertise
- Fascinating voyage along the coast of Africa from Spain to Sierra Leone, including visits to Morocco, Western Sahara, the Canary Islands, and Senegal
The Corinthian’s observing location offers close to the maximum possible eclipse in an area of relatively low cloudiness. The selected location takes advantage of lower cloud frequency due to the flow of dry air off the African continent. This combined with the mobility offered by a ship and the high altitude of the sun greatly increases the odds of successfully viewing the eclipse.Jay Anderson—NASA Eclipse Meteorologist

Days 1-4
Malaga, Spain / Casablanca, Morocco / Rabat / Marrakesh
Depart the US and embark aboard Corinthian, with a day to explore historic Malaga, birthplace of Picasso on the beautiful Costa del Sol. In Casablanca, we tour the magnificent new Hassan II Mosque, then head to Rabat, Morocco’s elegant capital, to visit the evocative Kasbah des Oudaias and ancient Chellah Citadel. On Day 4, we explore fabled Marrakesh, with its palm groves, 11th century minarets, and bustling souks.
Days 5-9
Agadir / Taroudanat / Lanzarote, Canary Islands // Laayoune, Western Sahara / At Sea
We call at Agadir, built around a sweeping bay and first colonized by the Portuguese in the 15th century, then head inland to the imperial walled town of Taroudannt, with its stately red ocher ramparts. Sailing out to Lanzarate, one of the seven islands of the Canary Archipelago, we explore Timanfaya National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and call at the Western Sahara port of El Marsa, with an excursion inland across Saharan dunes to Laayoune, a desert outpost with distinctive Spanish Saharan architecture. Days 8 and 9 are at sea, with lectures presented by our guest astronomer and cultural experts.
Days 10-12
Dakar, Senegal
In Senegal’s lively seaside capital, we ferry out to historic Gorée Island, which played a significant role in the Atlantic slave trade. With its narrow alleyways, colonial buildings, and slave castle, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We also visit the Village des Arts, IFAN Museum of African Arts, one of West Africa’s best, and enjoy a musical performance. Day 12 is at sea en route to the eclipse path.

Singles/Triples: A very limited number of guaranteed single cabins are available in Categories C, D, or E at 150% of the double occupancy rate. Requested singles in all other categories are 200% of the double occupancy rate. A third person may be added to double occupancy cabins (except cabins 334, 335, 420, 431) with the third person using a sofa bed and paying 50% of the double occupancy cruise price.
Shared Cabins: Participants traveling by themselves and wishing to share a cabin at double occupancy rates may request a roommate. We will do our best to match you with another single traveler. If this is not possible a single supplement rate of 150% of the per person rate for that cabin category will apply. Single travelers matched up by Wilderness Travel may be assigned to Categories C, D, or E, and before confirming a reservation such travelers must understand that they will have to pay 150% of the per person rate for their cabin category, in the event we cannot match them with a roommate.
Special Notes
All astronomers and other guest experts named are confirmed at the time of publication. If any speaker must cancel, Wilderness Travel will attempt to provide, but cannot guarantee, a suitable replacement.
In the uncertain, often volatile oil market of late, it is difficult to predict fuel costs over the long term, and more specifically, at the time of the voyage. Our prices are based upon the prevailing fuel rates at the time of the brochure printing, which is well in advance of departure. While we will do everything possible to maintain our prices, if fuel prices increase significantly prior to the time of the voyage, it may be necessary to institute a fuel surcharge.
Corinthian
Our Trips using this Lodging:
More like a private yacht than a cruise ship, Corinthian accommodates only 100 guests in 50 suites. Corinthian’s limited guest capacity, fine facilities, and distinctive style of operation attract like-minded travelers who return again and again to enjoy its custom-crafted itineraries and a style of cruising that is rarely found today. All of Corinthian’s suites face outside, providing views of the sea and landscape. Several have a private balcony. There are expansive open deck areas and attractive facilities, including a gym, spa, library (with Internet access), beauty salon, boutique, two lounges, a sun deck with Jacuzzi, and an outdoor cafe. An elegant restaurant accommodates all guests in an open, unassigned seating. The cuisine is outstanding, and the overall service is efficient and friendly while unobtrusive. An elevator serves all decks. A resident physician attends a well-equipped infirmary.Wi-Fi is available throughout the ship.
