What the Trip is Like

The trip is rated Level 2+, moderate. This is a deluxe camping and lodge safari with gameviewing by 4WD vehicle and nature walks that can be enjoyed by anyone in reasonably good health. There are a few long driving days over rough roads and rugged dirt tracks. Although this is not a particularly rigorous trip, we recommend that each participant undertake a preparatory program of physical conditioning. Daily walking or regular hiking, jogging, and stair-climbing are excellent for preparing for the trip. Any African safari is an adventure, and the traveler to Africa should bring along flexibility, a sense of humor, curiosity about new peoples and places, and an openness to the unexpected.

Game Drives and Wild Animals
During drives, we can at times get quite close to wild animals. Being very quiet improves everybody’s chances of observation. In the interest of safety, your Trip Leader explains limitations on movement while on game drives, in the safari vehicles, and around camp. Incidents with wild animals are extremely rare on safaris, but no camping safari can guarantee immunity from such incidents. Wilderness Travel is not to be held responsible for incidents involving the behavior of wildlife.

Note: Listed above are our signature accommodations for this trip. Although it is highly unlikely, we may make substitutions when necessary.

Felix Wambugu

Felix Wambugu, of the Kikuyu tribe, was born in central Kenya. His father was a traditional herbalist with a keen interest in medicinal herbs and when Felix was growing up, his father worked for Kenya's forestry department as an advisor on planting techniques and species identification. Felix' early insights into East African botany adds a unique perspective to his knowledge. In 1968, Felix was recruited to work as a ranger in Tsavo National Park and became part of the government's anti-poaching efforts during the time when elephant and rhino poaching were at their heights in this park. He has fascinating stories to tell about his life as a ranger and tracker in Tsavo. He later joined a safari outfitter in the Northern Frontier District and led wildlife safaris throughout Samburu and Kenya's desert north, gaining a great knowledge of the tribes and customs of the north. Felix is a wonderful guide with a deep knowledge of the bush, the wildlife, the varied cultures and ecosystems of Kenya. When not guiding, enjoys photography, soccer, and conservation activities, and he's a great raconteur with a wealth of anecdotes of life in pre- and post-independence Kenya.
