Morocco: The High Atlas Trek

Day 1
Marrakesh / Imlil (5,576')

More than a dozen peaks in Morocco's High Atlas top 13,000 feet, forming a physical frontier between the semi-arid Mediterranean coast and the huge desert expanses of the Sahara. Toubkal lies about 50 miles due south of Marrakesh between two major passes that cross the range. With Trip Leader Mark Gordon, we drive to Imlil, a large Berber village that serves as the starting point for our climb of Toubkal. We arrive in time for lunch and have time to explore the village or enjoy a hike.

Days 2-3
Mount Toubkal Base Camp (10,332') / Ascent of Toubkal (13,667')

Our trek begins with a gradual ascent on a pleasant mule track that leads to our camp below the summit of Toubkal. The following day we ascend to the summit of Toubkal (13,667'), highest point in North Africa, and marvel at the views of the Atlas Mountains all around us. The uphill going is strenuous, but Toubkal is walkable right to the top. Return to base camp for overnight.

Days 4-5
Imlil / Marrakesh

We hike back to Imilil, then continue by vehicle to Marrakesh, arriving in the afternoon in time for one last foray to the souks or a relaxing swim in the hotel pool. Depart on Day 5.
