Our Trips using this Extension

Days 1-3
Chyulu Hills, the Masai, and Kilimanjaro Views

A charter flight brings you to Campi ya Kanzi (“Camp of the Hidden Treasures’ in the Masai language), an eco-friendly safari camp in the Chyulu Hills and surrounded by 400 square miles of African wilderness. The Chyulu Hills are where Hemingway set his tales for The Green Hills of Africa. Located in Kenya’s prime game area between Amboseli and Tsavo National Parks, the lands surrounding Campi ya Kanzi range from in altitude from 3,500 feet to nearly 7,000 feet. There are hugely diverse ecosystems to explore, all with views out over the plains to Kilimanjaro. The wide variety of habitats brings a great diversity of wildlife to these gamelands, from lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe, and hartebeest to rarer species such as African wild dog, lesser kudu, and cheetah.

Each day you can enjoy a combination of game drives by open 4WD vehicles and nature walks with the Masai guides who call this land home. An early morning walk with a Masai tracker, looking for cheetah or leopard near camp, is an unforgettable experience—an entirely new way to appreciate the landscape. You also enjoy walks that lead from the Chyulu forest to the savanna plains, along rivers, and through ancient lava flows. Each night, sip sundowners in your private cottage as the sunset paints the snows of Kilimanjaro a rosy hue. For an optional adventure (at extra cost), set off early one morning for a dawn sightseeing flight around the snows of Kilimanjaro followed by a champagne breakfast.

You will have the opportunity learn about the Masai-their lifestyle, their land, and their ancient culture—from the Masai themselves. From camp, you can visit your Masai guide’s home and local projects including a medical dispensary and a primary school. Overnights at Campi ya Kanzi.

Campi Ya Kanzi

Chyulu Hills, Kenya

Campi ya Kanzi provides an authentic experience without sacrificing comfort. The camp features eight tented canvas cottages and delicious Italian cuisine. Your gracious hosts, along with the Masai, are Luca Belpietro and his wife Antonella Bonomi, who designed the camp to have minimum impact on the environment. The buildings are made of local materials such as lava rocks and thatch. Solar energy provides the hot water and electricity. No firewood is used in the kitchen, only eco-friendly charcoal made with coffee husks. Water is collected from the roofs and recycled through lava filters, supplying the vegetable garden and two water ponds where lion and gazelle come to drink. The camp was planned and built with the involvement of the Masai who own the land, employs the local Masai, and is committed to the health, education, and general well-being of the surrounding Masai community. Campi ya Kanzi  established the Masai Wilderness Conservation Trust and is the winner of Condé Nast Traveler’s 2008 World Savers Award in the poverty alleviation category for improving the livelihood of the people they touch.
