gourounsi burkina faso houses

Houses of the Gourounsi people

The distinctive homes of the traditional Gourounsis are decorated with geometrical patterns in white, red, and black made from natural pigments. Their functional lines are said to have inspired the Swiss architect Le Corbusier.

Our Trips using this Extension

Timbuktu, Dogon Country and Beyond

Days 1-3
Ouahigouya , Burkina Faso / Bob Dioulasso

(Trip members joining our Burkina Faso Extension fly from Timbuktu to Mopti on Day 14 of the main trip.) From Mopti, we drive to Ouahigouya, Burkina Faso, exploring rolling savannas as we make our way to Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina’s second city, with visits to Mossi and Senofu villages en route. Bobo is a pleasant place of leafy mango trees and graceful colonial buildings in the Sudanic style. It is also a center for traditional West African music.

Days 4-5
Banfora / Gan / Gaoua / Lobi Country

Heading through a beautiful region of cliffs and forests, we reach the town of Banfora, with a stop on the way at Lac de Tengrela, a chance to see the hippos that dwell in the lake. Later we visit Gan villages, with their fortified architecture and cemeteries dedicated to past Gan kings and queens. We may be able to meet with the French-speaking king of Gan if he is in residence. We continue through the hilly, green landscape of Lobi country, visiting picturesque Lobi villages including Kampti, with its fetish priests.

Days 6-8
Gourounsi Country / Tiebele / Ouagadougou

Crossing Gourounsi country, we visit settlements around Tiebele, a traditional Gourounsi town in a tree-dotted landscape. The Gourounsi live in labyrinthine compounds painted in beautiful geometric patterns. We continue to Ouaga, Burkina’s capital and the once the seat of the Mossi Empire, for a visit to the colorful Grand Marche, with its vegetable sellers and fabric vendors. We tour the ethnographic collection at the national museum before departing on the evening Day 8.
