This was a truly outstanding trip. The ship was beautiful and being under 24 sails is truly an adventure for anyone who loves sailing (we do!). The staff was excellent, came from a worldwide background, and were very competent and friendly. We would be pleased to repeat such a trip.Edgar & Eva G.—Syracuse, NY

Itinerary

Day 1
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

Arrive in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and embark on the Sea Cloud.

Days 2-3
La Romana, Dominican Republic / At Sea

We explore the Maravillas Caves with their ancient Taino cave paintings. Day 3 is at sea.

Day 4
North Sound, Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands

The waters surrounding the British Virgin Islands are one of the most beautiful places to sail in the world, with perfect wind conditions, an endless turquoise sea, and views of several small islands with perfect natural harbors. On Virgin Gorda, we enjoy an excursion to an unusual geological formation known as “The Baths,” a gigantic rock labyrinth made out of circular-shaped granite.

Day 5
Jost Van Dyke, British Virgin Islands

We sail along the Sir Francis Drake Channel to White Bay, Jost Van Dyke. Zodiacs bring us to shore where we can go snorkeling, swimming, or indulge in other water-based activities. A barbecue on the island's fine white-sand beach rounds out our wonderful day.

Days 6-7
Gustavia, St. Barthélemy / At sea

St. Barthélemy (St. Barts) has been cultivating a mix of luxurious style with a laid-back Caribbean ambiance for more than 40 years. Mega-yachts anchor in the harbor of Gustavia, and we can explore the town's picture-perfect colonial facades. Most of the next day is at sea as we head to Iles des Saintes, arriving there in the late afternoon.

Day 8
Terre-de-Haut, Iles des Saintes

The archipelago of the Iles des Saintes has been part of France since the 17th century. We explore the charming town of Terre-de-Haut,  overlooked by historical Fort Napoleon.

Day 9
St. Lucia

On the island of St. Lucia, with its trademark twin volcanic peaks, sulfur springs reveal the strength of the earth's inner core and botanical gardens showcase nature in all its glory.

Day 10
Port Elizabeth, Bequia / Sea turtle sanctuary

We drop anchor in Admiralty Bay, near the pretty town of Port Elizabeth, a meeting place for mariners and luxury private yachts. Our excursions here include a visit to a sea turtle sanctuary.

What the Trip is Like

The trip is rated Level 1, Easiest, and is appropriate for anyone in good health who is physically active. Tenders are used to ferry passengers ashore for walks to wildlife sanctuaries, scenic nature areas, and local towns and villages. When appropriate, Zodiacs are used to access the beaches. There are also ample opportunities for swimming and snorkeling. Setting of the sails is always interesting, and it’s exciting to watch the crew balance in the rigging and unfurl yards of sailcloth to get the Sea Cloud II underway by sail.

Sea Cloud

The majestic windjammer Sea Cloud has a fascinating history and an authentic air of nostalgia. This four-masted barque, today an elegant 64-guest yacht, was built in 1931 at the Krupp family shipyard in Kiel, Germany. The largest private sailing yacht of her day, she was commissioned by one of Wall Street's wealthiest businessmen, E. F. Hutton. His wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post, heiress to a huge fortune, designed the luxury yacht, dedicating at least two years to the task. After the ship was sold in 1955, there were less glamorous days for this vessel and she became a weather ship for the US Coast Guard and later served in the US Navy during World War II. In 1978, she was bought by a group of Hamburg-based shipowners and businessmen and given a new life. In 2011, the Sea Cloud underwent extensive renovations again. Today the ship’s timeless elegance has been faithfully restored, from the bridge to the promenade deck, with marble fireplaces, teakwood benches, and selected antiques. Fully air conditioned, she has some 32,000 square feet of canvas across 30 sails and cruises the Mediterranean in summer and the Caribbean in winter, much of it under sail.
