Umlani Bush Camp
Timbavati, South Africa
With eight traditional round African-style reed-and-thatch chalets, Umlani offers wilderness and seclusion. The chalets are fitted with beds and each has an en suite bathroom including an open-air bush shower heated by wood fire. Umlani's philosophy of “getting back to nature” is enhanced by the fact that the camp operates without electricity and noisy generators. The chalets and the entire camp are lit only by candles and oil lamps. In the evenings, pre-dinner drinks can be enjoyed in the traditional boma around the fire, followed by dinner in the open, candle-lit dining area. The camp also has a swimming pool and bar overlooking the riverbed. Umlani is Fair Trade-certified, which means that it benefits the local community in terms of economic development. Umlani helps support a Shangaan cultural village and is committed to training community members in the hospitality and guiding industry.
