Kaya Mawa Lodge

Lake Malawi, Malawi

On a crescent-shaped bay on Likoma Island in deep blue Lake Malawi, Kaya Mawa was rated “one of the planet’s 10 most romantic destinations” by Condé Nast Traveler readers. This utterly remote lodge is quite an amazing getaway, with its ten teak-framed chalets, each with a four-poster bed, a bathtub/shower built of stone, and a private terrace right at water’s edge. The chalets fall into the “rustic luxury” category and are open to the lake breezes to keep them cool. Electricity is on for most of the day, the food is excellent, and the bar is well-stocked. Kaya Mawa’s owners built the local school and have worked hard to employ the local people, who helped build the chalets and are partners in the Kaya Mawa Project. Just doing nothing is wonderful here, but the lake is inviting, absolutely clear, full of fish, and there’s good snorkeling. Don’t miss a bike ride (bikes provided) among the baobab trees, mango groves, and friendly villages of Likoma Island.
