Traditional Hotels & Lodges of Bhutan

Bhutan

Most hotels in Bhutan offer more basic accommodations than you might expect in a US or European hotel, yet they are comfortable and the Bhutanese hospitality is welcoming. Rigsum Lodge, the only hotel in Haa, Bhutan’s westernmost valley, is a small hotel on the outskirts of a tiny village. The twin-bedded rooms at the Rigsum have en suite bathrooms with hot-water showers. Meals are served buffet-style in a large central dining room. The Zangtho Pelri and Meri Puensum lodges, both built on hillsides above the lush rice terraces of the Punakha Valley, offer simple twin-bedded rooms with en suite bathrooms and hot-water showers. In these lodges, rooms are spread out in a garden setting, with a central building where meals are served. The Druk and River View, both in Thimphu, offer a similar level of accommodation but in quite different settings. The Druk, one of Bhutan’s original hotels, was built for the king’s coronation in 1974 and is just off Thimphu’s main square, great for exploring town on foot, while the River View is on a ridge above town, which offers an escape from the bustle of Thimphu. Both have comfortable twin rooms with private baths. The Dechen Hill Resort, in a secluded part of the gorgeous Paro Valley, offers clean, comfortable twin rooms with en suite bathrooms.
