Kirk Watson

Kirk Watson, a native of Scotland, grew up in a small village in the foothills of the Cairngorms, a perfect place for an early introduction to skiing, rock climbing, canoeing, and walking. After receiving a degree in geology from Glasgow University and working as a geologist, he managed a farm in Kenya before returning to his first love—exploring the outdoors. He has traveled and climbed in East Africa, the Alps, the Pyrenees, New Zealand, and South America, and spent six years in Antarctica guiding scientists across glaciers and up mountains by foot, ski, and snow mobile. Kirk holds a Mountain Instructor Certificate, the highest national qualification for mountaineering and climbing, and has worked full time as a mountain and canoe coach for 12 years. In between enjoying the outdoors, Kirk makes films, including documentaries and fiction, and also the first-ever fictional feature film in Antarctica. His favorite country is his homeland of Scotland—“on the right day it’s the most beautiful place in the world.”
