James Matu, born in Arusha, Tanzania, near Mt. Kilimanjaro, grew up in Kenya, where after high school he played professional soccer in the Kenya Premier League. His love for the mountains and the outdoors led him to return to Tanzania, and he began to work on Kilimanjaro expeditions, first as a porter, working his way up to a leadership position. James has now climbed the mountain over 100 times on all of its routes. He has completed National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) courses in Advanced Technical Climbing and Wilderness First Aid Response as well as an Emergency Medicine with Aerie Backcountry Medicine. Ornithology is also one of James’ interests, and he still finds time to play soccer in his spare time. He is fluent in English and Swahili.
