Beatriz Gutierrez

Beatriz Gutierrez, a native of Galicia, attended the University of Santiago de Compostela and earned a degree in design from the art school in La Coruna. In the early 1980s, she moved to a village in the Alpujarras to indulge her passions for hiking and writing (she is still working on a novel). Later, she lived in England for nine years, where her knowledge of Nepali and Indian art led her to work for Sotheby's and Christie's. She opened her own art gallery in Manchester and while there served as representative for Manchester's Spanish consulate. In 1997, she returned to her beloved Alpujarras and became a full-time mountain guide. She currently lives with her English boyfriend in a tiny Alpujarran village "in a 300-year-old house that constantly needs attention!" Bea has guided our southern and northern Spain trips for many years and is a favorite among trip members. "There is one particular moment I love on the Pilgrim's Way hiking trip, at a place on the trail called the Iron Cross, where my trip members become very spiritual with their sense of achievement. People traditionally place a stone below the cross to mark their passing, and I always do, too, with the same intense feeling. On every trip, I want trip members to enjoy the hiking and the landscape, but also to come away with a sense of all aspects of our way of life here, from the art to the food to the spirituality." Bea speaks Spanish, English, Portuguese, and some German.
