Kathy Butler

Kathy Butler hails from a small town in New South Wales, Australia, where she studied art and worked as a nurse for eight years before her first visit to Nepal in 1985. Intoxicated by the taste of curries and chapatis, Kathy quit her job and headed back to Asia the next year. From 1987 to 1999, she spent every summer and one winter backpacking throughout Tibet, first in Central Tibet, then on the northern Changtang Plateau, playground of Tibet's remaining wild yaks, "where I raced with Tibetan antelope and had an encounter with a very handsome lynx," she reports. Kathy also hitchhiked on a pilgrim truck for weeks into far western Tibet to backpack around Mt. Kailas and into eastern Tibet's Kham and Amdo regions. She has guided treks for us throughout the Himalayas, including Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet, for many years. "Once I started leading trips, I discovered what a joy it is to share my passion for Tibet and its remarkable people and religious culture with others, and watch them be blown away by the magic of the place. Where else can you have dinner with a Rimpoche, meet monks who fly, and watch sunrise on the highest mountain on earth? (This all did really happen on my last WT trip!) I want my trip members to fall in love with this mystical, magical place, as I have, and be humbled by the overwhelming generosity, dignity, and humor of a very hard-pressed people." Kathy created the original maps and artwork to the acclaimed guidebook Trekking in Tibet. She lives in the Blue Mountains outside Sydney, Australia.
