TJ Beches

Tarkong (TJ) Beches was born and raised on the remote island atoll of Kayangel in the northern Palau islands. He learned the traditional art of Palauan fishing at age four, and his grandfather shared with him an encyclopedic knowledge of fish behavior as well as his love and concern for Palau’s reefs. Without TV, video games, or any modern distractions, TJ turned his island paradise into a natural playground, climbing coconut trees, digging for megapode eggs, and observing nesting sea turtles. He moved to Koror to complete high school, then continued his education with a degree in Tourism Management. Today TJ’s perspective on Palau’s natural history comes from science and biology as well as Palau’s traditional knowledge of marine resources. He loves kayaking through the Rock Islands and introducing Palau’s wildlife, culture, and history to guests from around the world. Says TJ, “Sharing Palau with foreign visitors has helped me appreciate the beauty that all Palauans have inherited.”
