Walking Safari in Luangwa, Canoe Safari on the Zambezi

Ultimate Zambia Safari

Zambia, land of the legendary walking safari and the mighty Zambezi River, is often called “the real Africa” because its environment is as untamed as it was 50 years ago. In South Luangwa National Park—3,500 square miles of unspoiled Africa—we experience a quintessential safari on foot and by open 4WD vehicle along the sweeping bends of the Luangwa River, observing a concentration of wildlife unsurpassed in southern Africa. The leopard sightings are breathtaking here. On the Lower Zambezi, we canoe on quiet river channels for up-close gameviewing and savor game walks, night drives, and the unrivaled location of our wildlife lodge at the confluence of the Zambezi and Chongwe Rivers, favorite wilderness haunt of explorer David Livingstone. Our group size—six people—makes for an intimate experience of Africa.

Itinerary-in-Brief

Days 1-3
Nsefu Camp / South Luangwa National Park

South Luangwa National Park’s pristine grasslands, woodlands, and riverine forests are home to huge concentrations of plains game and their predators. From charming Nsefu Camp, nestled along the river in a remote sector of the park, we enjoy bush walks as well as morning and evening drives by open 4WD vehicles. From the camp’s thatched dining room, we often see elephant, hippos, and antelope on the river banks.

Days 4-5
Walking Safari / Luangwa Valley

Walking safaris were pioneered in Zamiba, and we enjoy the ultimate walking experience in the Luangwa Valley, exploring five or six miles a day on foot in remote and wild terrain. We should see elephant, waterbuck, hippos, zebra, and with luck, the full complement of predators. We’re up at sunrise for our morning walk, perhaps along the clearwater Mupamadzi River, then back at camp for lunch and a siesta. Later we set out for an afternoon walk, ending with sundowners in a gorgeous setting and dinner under the open sky. We spend two nights in fully-serviced mobile camps.

Days 6-9
Lower Zambezi / Chongwe River Lodge

We fly to Lower Zambezi National Park, 2,000 square miles of pristine wilderness, for game walks and gameviewing by canoe, a fantastic way to get very close to the wildlife. The park is home to buffalo, hippos, zebra, and predators including leopard, lion, and hyena. Herds of elephant, up in the hundreds, wade in the shallows and reed islands of the storied Zambezi River. Overnights at Chongwe River Lodge, with its chalet tents under thatch with en suite bathrooms. Depart via Lusaka on Day 9, or join our Cape Town Extension.

Cape Town Extension
Days 9-12

Take the cable car (or hike) up Table Mountain, visit Cape Point Nature Reserve on the Cape of Good Hope, sample wines at the Stellenbosch and Franschhoek estates. Overnights in the gorgeous Cape Town waterfront district.
