The Wonders of Pohnpei and Palau

Ultimate Micronesia

Micronesia’s tiny green isles encircled by the blue expanses of the Pacific offer world-class sea kayaking, snorkeling in crystal-clear lagoons, and a fascinating look into traditional cultures with an ancient connection to the sea. On this tropical adventure with Trip Leader Ron Leidich, our magical coral isles are Pohnpei and Palau, each a world of its own and a showcase for Micronesia’s phenomenal scenery, diverse underwater universe, and vibrant cultural treasures. By day, we enjoy amazing natural history adventures, from magnificent snorkeling to exploring by kayak on the winding mangrove channels of the remote Shimizu River as it spills to the sea. By night, we settle into the comfort of beachside lodges with a traditional open-air ambiance.

Itinerary-in-Brief

Days 1-4
Pohnpei, Micronesia / Nan Madol / Liduhduhniap

With its jagged green coastline and blue coves, Pohnpei offers a perfect introduction to Micronesia’s beauty. Our snorkeling sites include the tranquil inner lagoon, pristine habitat for multicolored sponges, castle-like corals, and a myriad of Indo-Pacific reef fish. We paddle our kayaks around the mysterious rock fortress of Nan Madol, a 7th century archaeological wonder set on tiny islets. In Pohnpei’s luxuriant hills, we take a dip in a natural pool at the base of the twin Liduhduhniap Falls and keep an eye out for Pohnpei’s endemic flycatcher, fantail, and colorful lory. Overnights are in bungalows.

Days 5-8
Palau / Nikko Bay / Ulong Channel / Jurassic Lake

We fly to Palau, one of the most spectacular snorkeling destinations in the world. Paddling in sheltered Nikko Bay gives us our first look at Palau’s incredible coral gardens, World War II sites, and limestone caves. We snorkel the remote blue lagoons of Ulong Island, paddle through marine tunnels, and venture through a tunnel at low tide to enter the forgotten world of Jurassic Lake, with its diverse array of sponges, sea squirts, and hard corals. Overnights are at a beach lodge.

Day 9-13
Rock Islands / Palau’s Outer Reef

For a grand finale, we head out to the Rock Islands and Outer Reef. At Big Drop Off—the Ngemelis Wall—we enjoy the world’s greatest drift-snorkeling then explore sites including legendary Blue Corner, where schools of barracuda and big-eye trevalley patrol the reefs for unwary fish. We snorkel in the German Channel, on the lookout for graceful giant manta rays, and paddle in the turquoise oasis of Mandarin Fish Lake, where we should see no less than eight species of angelfish on a single snorkel. On one special day, we board our kayaks and drift down the cool, canopy-covered waters of the Shimizu River, traveling from fresh water to salty mangroves. We visit a hidden village en route where we are welcomed as guests. Overnights are at a beach lodge. Depart Day 13 via Koror.
