Climb Kili on the Shira-Western Breach Route

Serengeti & Kilimanjaro Climb

Epic Western Breach Route Reopens January 1, 2008!!!

The stunningly spectacular Western Breach section of our Shira Route on Kilimanjaro reopened in January after a two-year closure caused by a rock slide. We pioneered the incredible Shira-Western Breach route in 1989, making it the ultimate way to reach “the snows of Kilimanjaro,” and now our Serengeti & Kilimanjaro journeys will again be able to experience the full majesty of the Western Breach, made famous in the IMAX film on Kilimanjaro. Other benefits of our 9-day Shira Route include a longer, more gradual ascent (for maximum acclimatization, shorter hiking days, and a better chance of summit success) and the wild beauty of the magnificent Shira Plateau, a World Heritage Site and one of Kilimanjaro’s wilderness areas. To top it all off, our summit day is a short, post-dawn hike to Kili’s peak at 19,340 feet from our spectacular Crater Camp at 18,000 feet, unlike the grueling 8-hour summit climb on other routes. If you’ve dreamed of climbing Kili this is the way to do it! A thrilling safari in private camps and luxury lodges in the Serengeti ecosystem is our post-climb reward.

Below is an Itinerary-in-Brief. To view a complete Detailed Itinerary, Download Full Itinerary or Email our Area Specialist

Itinerary-in-Brief

Days 1-2
Arusha / Mt. Meru Private Camp

We head up to our private camp at 6,000 feet on Mt. Meru, one of Africa’s beautiful volcanoes.

Days 3-11
Kilimanjaro / Unique 9-day Shira Plateau Route

Our Shira-Western Breach Route lets us ascend at 2,000 feet a day—much shorter hiking days than other routes, allowing for better acclimatization! We climb through magical forests and moorlands to reach our camp on the Shira Plateau (12,950’), with its dramatic view of Kili and its glaciers that can’t be seen from any other route on the mountain. In the high alpine desert at our Sheffield Camp (14,800'), our two-night stay maximizes our acclimatization for a safe and successful ascent. Our highest camp is at 18,500 feet in an unforgettable spot by the magnificent Furtwangler Glacier on the Summit Plateau. Our final climb is short and dramatic, bringing us to Uhuru Peak (19,340’), the true summit of Kilimanjaro. By late afternoon on Day 11, we are back at our lodge for a well-deserved hot shower and victory dinner.

Days 12-13
Ngorongoro Crater

From a stunning 5-star lodge, experience the scenic and wildlife wonders of the Ngorongoro Crater.

Days 14-16
Safari in Serengeti National Park / Tarangire National Park

Explore the wildlife paradises of Serengeti (December-March) or Tarangire (June-October), with accommodation in a luxurious Wilderness Travel private camp in a secluded location.

Days 17-19
Gibbs Farm

In this haven of old colonial tranquility, originally a coffee plantation, enjoy waterfall walks, evening jogs, birding (over 200 species recorded), and cultural visits. Depart via Arusha Day 19.

Options from game walks to mountain biking, overnights at exquisite Lake Manyara Serena Lodge.
