Across India’s Legendary Desert Kingdom

Royal Rajasthan - Pushkar Fair

Princely fortresses rising out of golden desert sands are the legacy of Rajasthan, an exotic land best described by its colors—the brilliant reds and bold yellows of tribal costumes, the soft pinks of ancient palaces, the tawny browns of the desert. Traditional culture is one of Rajasthan’s enchantments, and our journey includes an annual fair (the Pushkar Camel Fair in November, the Nagaur Cattle Fair in February), a spectacular gathering of thousands of desert people in all their finery. Our unique 3-day rail journey aboard the Palace on Wheels carries us to the romantic walled cities of Rajasthan, with their airy palaces of marble and onyx, extravagant medieval forts, and finely carved temples. Sunrise at the Taj and an overnight in a maharaja’s palace add to our royal pleasures in this fascinating land.

Itinerary-in-Brief

November 2008 Pushkar Fair Departure

Days 1-2
Delhi

We explore the sites and scenes of Old and New Delhi, from Mughal tombs to famous markets.

Days 3-6
Palace on Wheels / Jaipur / Jaisalmer / Jodhpur

The color and vibrancy of Rajasthan is seen on a princely scale in its ancient desert cities. The Palace on Wheels train brings us to the quintessential Rajasthani city of Jaipur, built by Maharaja Jai Singh II in the early 18th century. It is an unsurpassed testament to the craftsmanship of the old masters. We continue to the medieval walled city of Jaisalmer, rising like a mirage from the desert, and to Jodhpur, a 15th century city of palaces, gardens, and bazaars.

Days 7-8
Udaipur

Udaipur is one of the most romantic cities in the world, with its oasis of palaces, traditional havelis (mansions), parks, fortresses, and temples. The city is built on the shores of Lake Pichola with 17th century palaces covering the two lake islands. Our explorations include the City Palace, a warren of narrow passages connecting courtyards, royal apartments adorned with brilliant miniature paintings, and decorative tiles and mosaics.

Days 9-10
Pushkar Camel Fair

Pushkar is a fantastically colorful annual gathering of India’s desert nomads, with camel and horse races and traditional singers, musicians, and acrobats. We stay in a deluxe tented camp to enjoy the festivities.

Days 11-14
Bharatpur / Agra / Taj Mahal

In Bharatpur, we visit the renowned Keoladeo bird sanctuary and the Deeg Palaces, a World Heritage Site. In the Mughal capital of Agra, we feast our eyes on the extraordinary Taj Mahal at sunrise. Depart late evening via Delhi on Day 14.
