Spain’s Magnificent Mountain Realm

Across the Pyrenees

Some of the best hiking in Europe is found on the Spanish side of the Pyrenees Mountains, and here we also discover the diversity of cultures that make northern Spain so enchanting. We hike below soaring snow-capped peaks, follow shepherds’ paths into dramatic mountain cirques, and also relish the atmosphere and flavor of exquisite stone villages lost in time. In Aragon, we discover the lovely hilltown of Ainsa, its walled center still elegant and medieval, and enjoy two nights in Caldes de Boi, famed since Roman times for its thermal waters. We end with a flourish, hiking the beautiful trails of the Catalan Pyrenees, then head to the Mediterranean coast at beautiful Barcelona, with its renowned architecture and superb museums dedicated to native sons Picasso and Miró.

Itinerary-in-Brief

Day 1
Pamplona / Siresa

We meet in Pamplona and head right to the mountains for a hike, with an overnight in Siresa, a Pyrenean village of cobbled streets and splendid old stone houses.

Days 2-3
Ordesa National Park / Torla

A classic Pyrenees hike brings us through an intriguing forest below the West Face of Mt. Bisaurin. In Ordesa National Park, one of the most glorious mountain realms in all Europe, we hike below Monte Perdido, where mountain goats scramble beneath vertical cliffs. Ordesa National Park is crowned by peaks over 10,000 feet high and festooned with hundreds of cascades. Overnights are in Torla, a village of traditional slate houses set in a panoramic valley.

Days 4-5
Ainsa / Caldes de Boi

We take a day off from hiking for cultural exploration in medieval Ainsa and the lost village of Taüll, with its incredible Romanesque churches. The next day we hike in the glaciated landscape of Aiguestortes National Park to the high, rocky realm of the Ice Fountain, with lunch at a mountain lodge. Overnights in Caldes de Boi, an ancient spa town where we can enjoy a soak in our hotel’s own spa.

Days 6-7
Catalan Pyrenees / Andorra

Hiking across Aiguestortes National Park, we cross the Potarro de Espot (8,000'), the highest point on our trip, to the stunning glacial lake of Sant Maurici. The next day in Andorra, an independent principality established in 1278 in the mountains between France and Spain, we hike panoramic trails then descend to the first Spanish village, the medieval town of Bescaran, with its magnificent Romanesque bell tower.

Days 8-9
Barcelona

After a morning hike with Mediterranean views, we spend the afternoon in Barcelona, with its artistic and architectural heritage from Art Nouveau to Gaudi. Depart on Day 9.
