Itinerary-in-Brief
Day 1
Istanbul, Capital of Byzantium
A fascinating guided walking tour brings you to the renowned Topkapi Palace, a marvelous imperial labyrinth with harem quarters and glorious displays of the bejeweled treasures of the sultans. Explore the monumental Haghia Sophia, the “Church of Holy Wisdom,” built by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century, and the ethereal Blue Mosque, with its slender minarets visible for miles around. Enjoy a sunset ferry ride on the Bosphorus and dinner at a waterfront café. Your hotel is in the lovely Sultanahmet district right in the heart of the Old City.
Days 2-7
Turquoise Coast Odyssey
The calm waters of the Turquoise Coast glisten in every shade of blue in idyllic, deeply indented coves fragrant with pine forests and wild thyme. Aboard your own luxurious gulet—a wooden sailing yacht designed for cruising these waters—set out on a fantastic six-day cruise from Bodrum to experience the joys of this celebrated coast. Your guide will share the best hiking trails and villages, and life on board is sheer delight: swimming, snorkeling in clear waters, and feasting on delicious cuisine served al fresco on the deck. Fresh-caught seafood is a highlight of many meals.
Day 8
Ancient Ephesus
One of the most important outposts of the ancient world, Ephesus was the third largest city in the Roman Empire, after Rome and Alexandria. In this beautifully restored metropolis where St. Paul lived and preached, stroll from the theater to the harbor on the mile-long marble-paved Arcadian way, with its well-preserved mosaics, and feel transported back to the glory days of Rome.
Days 9-10
Fairytale Cappadocia
With its unique cultural heritage and landscape of tufa towers on the Anatolian steppes, Cappadocia is breathtaking. Explore the Ihlara Valley, a stream-lined oasis with lovely villages and frescoed Byzantine cave churches, then head underground to visit the ancient troglodyte cities of Kaymakli or Derinkuyu, with their labyrinth of hand-carved rooms and tunnels burrowing 12 stories deep into the soft tufa rock. From Uchisar village, a natural citadel in a magnificent lunar landscape, hike to the open-air museum of the Goreme Valley, and visit the pottery workshops at the riverside village of Avanos. Your charming small hotel, set high above the village of Urgup, is carved into a tufa tower, with 12 superbly appointed cave rooms and magical views from its terrace.
