Days 1-3
Ngorongoro, an African Eden
The ancient caldera of a collapsed volcano, Ngorongoro Crater shelters one of the most beautiful wildlife havens on earth, graced with towering walls and sheltering forests, grasslands, life-giving springs, and a large soda lake. With your expert safari guide, set out on thrilling game drives across the crater floor to see Africa’s largest permanent concentration of wildlife. Explore by 4WD vehicle among elephant, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, and prides of lion. Your deluxe accommodation is Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, the most enchanting lodge on the crater rim, with its elegant Masai-inspired cottages. Optional activities include visits to a Masai village and to Olduvai Gorge, where the fossil-hunting Leakey family made major discoveries of early hominids.
Days 4-6
The Epic Serengeti
Serengeti National Park is one of the earth’s natural paradises. The Masai call it Siringitu, “the place where the land moves on forever,” and today the park protects the largest and most varied collection of terrestrial wildlife on earth. Two World Heritage Sites and two Biosphere Reserves have been established within the Serengeti region. Your ultimate safari into the infinite Serengeti wilderness includes gameviewing from vehicles both by day and night, and the spine-tingling experiences of seeing big prides of lions, solitary leopards perched atop rock outcrops, swift cheetahs, elephant families roaming the woodlands, and a host of prey from herds of wildebeest to zebra, gazelle, and giraffe. At night, far from civilization, listen to the sounds of wild Africa and stargaze under the clear sky. Our hand-picked safari camps in the heart of the game-rich northern Serengeti are exclusive, off the beaten track, and located on vast stretches of Masai gamelands. Deluxe Grumeti River Camp, in the path of the famous Serengeti migration as it crosses the Grumeti River (June-July), or Klein’s Camp, with commanding views of the valley through which hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra migrate, abound with resident game all year.
Days 7-9
Zanzibar, the Spice Island
Zanzibar and its islands are bathed in the heady scents and romanticism of a bygone era. Your accommodation is dreamy Mnemba Island Resort, one of the world’s most exclusive getaways, with just 10 private cottages on an untouched atoll off the coast of Zanzibar. A pristine swathe of beach defines the island’s one-mile circumference, and a protection zone surrounds Mnemba, conserving magnificent coral reefs where giant turtles, ghost crabs, and spectacular tropical fish swim through the lagoons. Fresh, delicate sea breezes lend a castaway air to the entire island, and the water is warm and inviting.
