Itinerary-in-Brief
Day 1
Cusco, Heart of an Empire
With its enchanting maze of cobbled streets and lively sidewalk cafes, Cusco is a charming city with a unique blend of Inca, Quechua, and Spanish heritage. On a private walking tour tailored to your interests, discover Cusco’s fascinating back streets and lively traditional markets, and roam the artisans’ quarter of San Blas. Walk the ramparts of the massive Sacsayhuaman fortress, whose parallel walls of superbly interlocking stone blocks zigzag for almost 2,000 feet overlooking the city.
Days 2-3
Inca Fortresses, Quechua Villages
The magnificent Urubamba Valley, a dramatic corridor through the high Andes, is filled with traditional Quechua villages and Inca ceremonial sites in fantastic settings. The Incas placed their sacred sites high above their beloved valley, and the crown jewel, Machu Picchu, is perched on a promontory at its easternmost reaches. In off-the-beaten-path Chinchero, an old colonial settlement set on a commanding rise at the head of the valley, meet Quechua master weavers with their intricately crafted textiles. Explore Pisac, the largest fortress-city complex of the Incas, possessing the lofty setting of a condor’s nest. Climb up to the grand stone ruins of majestic Ollantaytambo, strategically set at the northwest end of the Sacred Valley, where the terrain gradually narrows to a gorge. Here, the rebel Manco Inca and his men held out against Pizarro’s forces in one of the only battles the Spaniards lost. Below the ruins, stroll the lanes of the traditional town of Ollantaytambo, the only Inca settlement still inhabited in Peru—the town retains its original Inca street plan and trapezoidal shape. Enjoy lodging in the heart of the Sacred Valley with vistas of snow-capped mountains.
Days 4-5
Machu Picchu, the Lost City
Perched on the edge of a sheer precipice above the Urubamba River, Machu Picchu is a stunning city of stone. This bewitching sanctuary is the most perfect surviving example of Inca architecture, never looted or damaged by the conquistadors. Enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience of the lost city on a guided walking exploration. Our Deluxe Option offers an overnight at the famous Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge, the only hotel right at the ruins, with Machu Picchu just steps away. Return to Cusco on the late afternoon train on Day 5.
Day 6

Enjoy a final day to savor Cusco, revisit favorite places, and discover new ones. You'll have time for shopping, gallery or museum visits, or a day hike. This ancient Inca capital has become renowned for its Nuevo Andino cuisine and fine restaurants—dining here is a superb experience.
