Itinerary-in-Brief
Days 1-3
Heritage of India
Visit New and Old Delhi’s historic sites, including the great Red
Fort and the moving memorial to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat. On the evening
of Day 3, take a first-class sleeper train to Kathgodam.
Days 4-5
Hidden Villages of the Kumaon Himalayas
Walk an ancient trail to the lovely village of Deora, passing waterfalls,
temples, and terraced fields, with blue skies, the crisp scent of cedar
and pine, and stunning Himalayan vistas all around. With your guide, enjoy
a first-hand insight into the traditional culture and savor the pleasures
of lodge-based hiking, including delightful picnic lunches. The next day’s
hike brings you to Alai, where you are greeted by welcoming smiles of
the local villagers. En route, you have a chance to see the way grain
is ground into flour using the power of a waterfall to turn a wooden grinding
wheel. You also learn about the medicinal uses of some of the local plants.
On the two nights of homestays, you are the honored guest of the head
of the village, enjoying meals specially prepared and served beside the
fireplace as well as time to meet the children and hear storytelling by
your hosts. At your homestay, you have a private room in a renovated home.
The homes in this beautiful region are colorfully painted and adorned
with intricate woodcarvings.
Days
6-8
Himalayan Hikes from a Luxury Camp
Head to exclusive 360º Leti, open to just a handful
of guests, where you settle into a deluxe tented cottage for an exclusive
experience of the Himalayas. Leti has a stunning location at 8,000 feet
with amazing Himalayan views. Tented cottages are heated and feature ensuite
bathrooms and beds furnished with duvets and pashmina blankets. The camp’s
magnificent setting offers many choices for hikes with your guide, whether
into the valley to visit local villages and sacred temples, or up to ridges
for spectacular Himalayan vistas. Dine on your private veranda or in an
elegant dining room with wooden furniture, superb cuisine, and fine wines
enjoyed by candlelight. Every season in the Kumaon Himalayas offers something
special: in fall and winter, the skies are clear and blue, and Himalayan
views are at their most magnificent. In spring, the rhododendron forests
are in full bloom, turning the trails into a royal carpet of fresh red
petals.
Day 9
