Itinerary-in-Brief

Days 1-4
Masai Mara, A Radiant and Green Utopia

At an altitude of 5,000 feet, the Masai Mara Game Reserve is breathtakingly beautiful. The wide Mara River snakes through its rich, tree-studded grasslands. This celebrated river is full of frolicking hippos, and enormous groups of elephants wander through the rich marshes along its edge. Buffalo graze here in abundance, baboons leap through the brush, and solitary leopards survey from their perches in acacia trees. Kichwa Tembo, one of Kenya’s most beloved tented camps, or Mara Intrepids, with a spectacular location on a sweeping bend of the Mara River, are both on private Masai lands directly adjoining the famed Mara parklands and are not restricted by park rules. This keeps you far from the main safari circuit and allows you the freedom to enjoy spectacular off-road game drives in open 4WD vehicles, interpretive bush walks accompanied by Masai warriors, and night game drives to look for nocturnal animals and lions on the hunt. Optional hot air balloon safaris are an amazing experience in the Mara.

Days 5-8
Chyulu Hills, the Masai, and Kilimanjaro

Views Campi Ya Kanzi, is set within 400 square miles of African wilderness in southern Kenya’s prime gamelands between Amboseli and Tsavo. These private Masai lands stretch from the Chyulu Hills, where Hemingway spun his tales for The Green Hills of Africa, to the foothills of mighty Kilimanjaro. Enjoy thrilling 4WD game drives and unforgettable bush walks with a Masai tracker. Early one morning, set off for an optional dawn flight to the snows of Kilimanjaro, followed by a champagne breakfast. A wide variety of habitats brings a stunning diversity of wildlife to these gamelands, from lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe, and hartebeest to rarer species such as African wild dog, lesser kudu, and cheetah. With strong ties to the local Masai community, 16-guest Campi Ya Kanzi offers a wonderful chance to learn the ways of the Masai from the Masai themselves, with visits to their homes and schools. At night, sip sundowners in your private cottage as the sunset paints the snows of Kilimanjaro pink.

Days 9-10
Ngorongoro and Olduvai

In Tanzania, at the eastern edge of the Serengeti, is the largest unbroken ancient caldera in the world, Ngorongoro, ringed by steep walls and sheltering over 30,000 resident wildlife. Head down to the crater floor to explore by 4WD in this fantastic setting, one of the best places in Africa to observe prides of lions at close range, and enjoy an optional visit to the famed archaeological site of Olduvai Gorge, “the cradle of mankind.” Your accommodation, deluxe Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, perches on the crater rim.

Days 11-14
The Serengeti Wilds

You’ll feel as if you have the Serengeti all to yourself at your small and luxurious safari camp in the wild northern reaches of Serengeti National Park. Head out by 4WD to look for lions on the prowl, clans of spotted hyena, and a wide array of plains game. Your lodging is strategically located Klein’s Camp or Grumeti River Camp, both offering phenomenal wildlife encounters and solitude amid Serengeti’s wild beauty. Depart Day 14.

Optional Zanzibar Extension
Days 14-17

Zanzibar has spectacular coral reefs and warm waters teeming with marine life. Your deluxe accommodation is Mnemba Island, with your own cottage on a private white-sand beach. The calm, azure seas around Mnemba offer irresistible snorkeling and diving in a magnificently colorful aquatic world.
