Itinerary-in-Brief

Days 1-2
Arenal, Mountain of Fire

The most active volcano in Costa Rica, majestic Arenal is a nearly perfect cone emerging 5,300 feet from gentle green hills, and its nocturnal pyrotechnics are an awesome sight. In Arenal Volcano National Park, your guided adventures can include a trail hike, a mountain biking excursion, or a walk on an elaborate network of spectacular hanging bridges that give access to the canopy, a great way to enter the world of towering, orchid-draped trees in the park’s primary neo-tropical rainforest. Views of Arenal are beautiful from these bridges, and the biodiversity of the forest is unparalleled. More than 350 species of birds have been identified here, along with a colorful array of tropical frogs, lizards, and butterflies. Enjoy an evening soak in a natural thermal spring, then watch the nighttime glow and red-lava fireworks of Arenal Volcano from your balcony at The Lost Iguana Resort, set atop a hill and nestled into 100 acres of rainforest.

Days 3-4
Tortuguero, the Emerald Forest

Set along natural inland waterways of the Caribbean, Tortuguero National Park protects one of the last large areas of tropical rainforest in Central America. In this deep green world accessible only by boat, a maze of tranquil waterways overhung with rainforest provides a rich habitat for caimans, crocodiles, manatees, three species of monkeys (spider, howler, and white-faced), three-toed sloths, river otters, and a dazzling array of birdlife including all six species of kingfishers found in the New World. Set out on nature walks with your naturalist guide, and explore by boat in a labyrinth of canals that stretch along the Caribbean coast. Tortuguero is a world-famous nesting spot for green sea turtles (July-October) as well as leatherbacks (March-May). Beautiful Tortuga Lodge is your rainforest retreat.

Days 5-7
Manuel Antonio, Jewel of the Pacific Coast

En route to Manuel Antonio National Park on the Pacific Coast, try Costa Rica’s most popular adventure sport—the canopy zip line—for a bird’s-eye view of the canopy, where 90 percent of the rainforest wildlife lives. At Manuel Antonio National Park, enjoy a magnificent setting of crescent beaches, secluded bays, forested bluffs, and offshore islands. This Pacific reserve offers magical, vine-draped forests where white-faced monkeys jump from tree to tree, sloths gaze down from the canopy, and iguanas sunbathe on logs. Enjoy a hike with your naturalist guide to enter the hidden world of a tropical forest, or optional exploration by sea kayak in the serene Isla Damas Mangrove Sanctuary, a perfect way to discover and view wildlife up close. Another option is a snorkeling cruise and sunset sail featuring dolphin viewing, with the backdrop of a tropical sky turning pink and orange. Sea turtles, flying fish, and birdlife including boobies and frigatebirds share this environment with the many dolphins that frolic along the coast. Your accommodation is the beautiful Hotel Parador, with five acres of gardens and an on-site spa.
