Itinerary-in-Brief

Days 1-2
Old Shanghai

Stroll the Bund, Shanghai’s historic seafront, then head to Guiyang, capital of Guizhou Province.

Days 3-8
Hike to Ancient Villages of Guizhou

A scenic gem of terraced rice fields, limestone karst hills, and colorful villages, Guizhou Province has long been a “lost world” in China, its deeply mountainous landscape preserving unique cultures and keeping tiny villages isolated from the mainstream of modern China. Guizhou’s ethnic cornucopia makes it a paradise for travelers, and the village architecture is spectacular, with tile-roofed wooden houses in classic styles that date to the Ming Dynasty. Guizhou is the place to discover a hidden side of China, a quiet world inhabited by Old Han, Long-Skirt Miao, and other ethnic groups who still wear traditional clothing and ornate silver tribal jewelry. From your 4-star hotel in Guiyang, head out each day for hikes of one to three hours in exquisite landscapes. Your support staff is a private guide and your own personal cook—both wonderful traveling companions who offer unique insights into fascinating village cultures. On two nights, we offer the option of a homestay in which you are hosted by a local village family. One homestay is in Dazhai village, known for its centuries-old art of papermaking, and another is in Maomaohe, a lovely Long-Skirt Miao village tucked into a hillside.

Day 9-11
Khampas of Yunnan’s Tibetan Highlands

Gyalthang, a historic trading post on the eastern edge of the Himalayas, is a spectacular enclave of Tibetan culture at 10,800 feet. It is the heartland of the Khampa people, with their age-old traditions as swashbuckling horsemen and caravan traders. Meet the welcoming Khampas in their homes, hike through gorges, villages, and rhododendron forests below Mt. Shika, Gyalthang’s protector mountain, watch traditional dances, hear the legends of Khampa folklore, and visit the serene chapels of the 17th century Sumtsenling Monastery, where 700 monks study.

Day 12
Depart

Lhasa Extension
Days 12-15
