Itinerary-in-Brief

Days 1-4
Barrier Reef Snorkeling

The 200-mile-long Belize Barrier Reef, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the natural wonders of the planet, its warm waters teeming with marine life. Three of the only four coral atolls in the Western Hemisphere lie along this epic reef system. From a small lodge on a magical coral atoll, snorkel among eagle rays, playful dolphins, turtles, huge green morays, rainbow-hued parrotfish, and black-and-yellow striped angelfish. The waters are so extraordinarily clear that a look through your mask opens a kaleidoscopic world of flamboyant colors in shades from deep purple to brilliant red. The unbelievably rich snorkeling sites lie just 10 minutes from the white-sand beaches—no long boat rides—and in these sheltered waters, many sites are perfect for novice snorkelers.

Days 5-6
Tikal

Explore unforgettable Tikal, where ancient pyramids rear out of a vast jungle reserve. In this classic Maya city, mysteriously abandoned in 705 AD, feast your eyes on soaring limestone structures including the Temple of the Giant Jaguar, with its nine stories representing the nine layers of the Maya underworld. Walk the steep central stairways of the pyramids, explore the ballcourts and great plazas, listen to the howler monkeys and calls of birds, and marvel at the sheer scale of the setting. Today this site is protected within Parque Nacional Tikal, set on the edge of the huge Maya Biosphere Reserve. The vastness of this lost city is amazing, with hundreds of vine-draped structures still unexcavated by archaeologists.

Day 7

Optional Maya Mountains Mid-Trip Extension

The lush mountainous forests of Belize’s interior are a nature lover’s dream, with enormous caverns and a wealth of tropical wildlife. On this active 3-day extension, hike, wade, and climb through the limestone caverns of a fantastic Maya ceremonial cave system, canoe the Macal River, or explore the archaeological site of Xunantunich (“Maiden of the Rock”), where El Castillo, a pyramid 150 feet high, stands as a silent testament to the people who lived here 15 centuries ago.
