Itinerary-in-Brief

Days 1-2
Sea Kayaking, Whale Watching

An overnight at the historic Gustavus Inn is the perfect introduction to Glacier Bay. This former homestead turned into a welcoming inn has been in the same family for three generations. The next day, board your “mother ship,” the Whale Song, with its spacious decks for wildlife watching, and set off into fascinating Glacier Bay, John Muir’s “icy wilderness unspeakably pure and sublime.” This pristine wonderland of deep, narrow fjords is lined with rock walls and massive glaciers and is surrounded by towering mountains, including the 15,000-foot Fairweather Range, the highest coastal mountains in the world. Glacier Bay is superb whale-watching country for humpbacks, orcas, and minke whales, and it’s an unforgettable thrill to witness a whale’s spectacular leaping breach in this mythically beautiful landscape. With your naturalist guide, hike wild beaches looking for tracks of bear and moose, walk on tidewater glaciers, scan the high cliffs above for mountain goats, and explore by sea kayak (no previous experience necessary). Enjoy stunning views of the snow-capped Fairweather Mountains from the comfortable deck of the Whale Song as you sip a cup of hot chocolate or a glass of wine. Overnight aboard, with dinner of fresh Dungeness crab.

Days 3-4
Exploring the Ice World of Glacier Bay

Glaciers calve, eagles soar, and seals lounge on ice floes as you explore the breathtaking fjord called Johns Hopkins Inlet, with its nine glaciers in different stages of ebb and flow. Hunt for curious “ice worms,” learn about plant and animal succession, and walk among towering grounded icebergs. Take a hike up a mountainside for a bird’s-eye view of the top of a glacier. In Tarr Inlet, where the Grand Pacific and Margerie Glaciers cascade into the water, enjoy a wonderful paddle below a sheer cliff with a kittiwake and puffin rookery, then explore near Margerie Glacier, with its 250-foot-high icewall, for the breathtaking experience of watching an active, calving glacier from a safe distance. At night, relax in the cozy warmth of the Whale Song, enjoying wonderful meals and wildlife-watching from the deck.

Days 5-7
Mystical Dundas Bay

With its many islands and calm shoals, Dundas Bay is absolutely gorgeous. Entry is strictly regulated in this very special part of Glacier Bay National Monument. Anchor at the mouth of the bay to paddle sea kayaks or follow the tracks of moose, deer, bear, and wolves, and explore ancient old-growth forests. Wildlife here includes sea and river otters, and marmots. Birdlife abounds, from cormorants to cranes. On the wild beaches, you can pick strawberries, learn about and taste native plants, and enjoy a nature walk in glorious, flower-strewn meadows. Cow parsley, chocolate lily, lupine, wild iris, lily of the valley, and Indian paintbrush are among the plants that brighten the splendid landscape here. The next day, journey further up the Dundas Bay, learning about the human history and lore of this area. En route back down to the head of the bay, enjoy a leisurely kayak excursion, listening to the bird calls, puffing snorts of harbor porpoises, cries of the eagles, and perhaps catching a glimpse of the elusive “blue bears” of Dundas Bay. In the late afternoon of Day 7, disembark in Gustavus.
