A sea of towering dunescapes, bizarre kokerboom trees rising from rocky washes, a lone gemsbok crossing the red-orange sands, shimmering salt pans where desert elephants dig for water—this is Namibia, a feast for the senses and a landscape unlike any other in Africa. In this world of desert-adapted wildlife and infinite blue skies, we explore the massive dunes of Sossusvlei, the game-filled savannas of world-famous Etosha National Park, and the stark beauty of the wave-tossed Skeleton Coast, a sea of red sand and rock canyons along the wild Atlantic. The desert comes to life for us on fascinating game drives and walks, and our superbly located wilderness camps and lodges put us in the heart of this celebrated landscape.

We explore the immense Sossusvlei Dunes on foot as the morning light changes their colors from mauve to red to burnt orange. Night drives offer us a look at nocturnal Namib Desert wildlife including Cape fox, aardwolf, and blackbacked jackals, and the star- gazing is absolutely incredible under clear African skies. Our deluxe lodge offers easy access to the dunes and optional awe-inspiring balloon safaris.
A “flightseeing” journey gives us the ultimate views of the Skeleton Coast, with its shipwrecks, coastal dunes, and seal colonies, then sets us down at Swakopmund, a charming town of turn-of-the-century architecture. On a private cruise in Walvis Bay, we see marine life from flamingos to Cape fur seals, then head to our camp in the Hoanib Valley for game walks and game drives along the ephemeral Hoanib River. Only the sporadic roar of a lion or cackle of hyenas punctuates the silence of the African night here.
Privately owned Ongava Game Reserve adjoins world-famous Etosha National Park and is the ideal place from which to experience Etosha’s fascinating ecosystem. We track white rhino on foot and look for elephant, lion, black rhino, springbok and hartebeest congregating at the waterholes. Our lovely tented camp at Ongava, on Conde Nast Traveler’s Gold Reserve List, is tucked into a hidden valley.
The Skeleton Coast, wild and uninhabited, is named for the ghostly shipwrecks on its remote Atlantic shores. In this epic setting, one of the most hauntingly beautiful places on the planet, we camp safari-style and visit villages of the traditional Himba people. Depart on Day 12.
From Okonjima Lodge, home to The AfriCat Foundation, a non-profit organization rehabilitating orphaned cheetah and leopards, we track these sleek predators by 4WD and on foot.
