Tierra del Fuego and the Mountain Splendor of Paine and Fitzroy
In Patagonia
The epic landscapes of Patagonia are our destination on this magnificent lodge-based adventure in the granite-and-glacier worlds of Paine and Fitzroy and remote Tierra del Fuego, the archipelago at the “uttermost ends of the earth.” Day hikes bring us right to the foot of the great shark fin of Mt. Fitzroy in Argentina’s striking Glacier National Park, and to the great “cuernos” of Chile’s phenomenal Paine Towers, one of the scenic masterpieces of the planet. In Tierra del Fuego, we hike native coastal forests and explore the Beagle Channel by Zodiac. Throughout our journey, we enjoy the comfort of hotels and inns, including historic Estancia Helsingfors, with its superb location on the shores of Lago Viedma.

Itinerary-in-Brief
Days 1-3 Buenos Aires / Ushuaia / Tierra Del Fuego
After an overnight in cosmopolitan Buenos Aires, we fly to Ushuaia on the shores of the Beagle Channel. In Tierra del Fuego National Park, with Antarctica just 400 miles south of us across Drake’s Passage, we hike the coast through native canelo, beech, and wild cherry forests along secluded bays. We board Zodiacs and head out to the Beagle Channel, navigating through protected waters to a private island where we enjoy a hike with panoramas of the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego.
Days 4-6 Glacier National Park
The Fitzroy Massif and its satellites rise at spectacular and seemingly impossible angles, sculpted from solid granite into fantastic spires and towers by the tremendous force of the region’s glaciers. This complexity of peaks and “needles” captivates experienced mountain climbers from all over the world. From our comfortable lodge at El Chaltén, we hike each day to stunning perspectives of Fitzroy (11,703') and the granite spike of Cerro Torre (10,280'), one of the world’s fabled wall climbs. Glorious peaks, glacial lakes, and flower-carpeted valleys surround us in this mountain paradise.
Days 7-8 Estancia Helsingfors
In western Glacier National Park, we stay at Estancia Helsingfors, a spectacularly located turn-of-the-century ranch on the shores of Lago Viedma. On our hikes, we feast our eyes on beautiful views of the Viedma Glacier and the Fitzroy Massif. The wildlife is abundant around this historic ranch and we keep an eye out for Patagonia’s exotic wildlife, including guanacos and soaring condors.
Days 9-10 Moreno Glacier / Lago Argentino
On the shores of turquoise Lago Argentino in Glacier National Park is a spectacular sight: the massive Moreno Glacier, one of the few glaciers in the world that is still advancing. We explore the glacier by boat and on foot. The sounds are as amazing as the views of the glacier’s 10-story-high icewall calving chunks of ice into the lake.
Days 11-12 Paine National Park, Chile / Grey Glacier
Crossing the border into Chile, we discover Paine National Park, declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1978. The park protects a landscape of stupendous granite towers, huge azure glacier lakes, tumbling waterfalls, massive glaciers, and unique wildlife. From our comfortable lodge on the shores of Lago Grey, we hike to incredible views of the massive Grey Glacier and the Southern Icecap. The 10-mile-long Grey Glacier has a huge headwall of ice that sends icebergs crashing into Lago Grey.
Days 13-14 Paine National Park / Las Torres
From Hosteria Las Torres, set on a 4,000-acre private ranch in the heart of Paine National Park, our hikes bring us right to the base of the three curving, sculpted Paine Towers, and up to high lookouts in the stunning Ascención Valley.
Days 15-16 Punta Arenas
We fly home from Punta Arenas, on the Straits of Magella
Iguazu Falls Extension (pre-trip)
Enjoy the majesty of Iguazu Falls, where the 2.5-mile-wide Rio Parana plunges nearly 300 feet into the jungle. Activities include hikes and boat excursions on the Rio Parana.
