This is one of the greatest hikes in the world and one that we’ve honed to perfection, with spectacular campsites and superb full-service camping along the way. Our extraordinary team of Trip Leaders and trail guides have a passion and a joy for creating an unforgettable journey on this famous route. Itinerary-in-Brief
Day 1 Cusco
In the Incas’ imperial city, we enjoy an introduction to the ceremonial heart of the Inca Empire as we explore the mighty fortress of Saqsayhuaman and other Inca sites. Overnight at the Hotel Monasterio, a 16th century monastery transformed into a luxurious hotel. This elegant accommodation is a member of the Leading Hotels of the World.
Day 2 Urubamba Valley
The Urubamba Valley was sacred to the Incas for many reasons, a key one being that it has an agreeable climate and fertile plains, a rare combination in the high Andes. In this beautiful Sacred Valley, we visit the traditional village of Pisac as well as the Inca fortress-city that rises above it. The Pisac fortress is famed for the intricate Inca-built terracing that sweeps around the mountain on which it is perched. Overnight at a lovely hacienda in the Urubamba Valley.
Days 3-6 Inca Trail
After we explore the beautiful village of Ollantaytambo and the stunning Inca fortress above it, we head to a dramatically located camp below Mt. Veronica (20,275'). The next morning, we set off on the royal trail to Machu Picchu, following in the footsteps of the Incas. We cross two high passes (the highest is 13,650 feet) as we explore major Inca ruins accessible only to hikers and enjoy spectacular campsites with views across the dancing clouds and steep green peaks of the Vilcabamba. Runkuracay, a circular ruin with massive walls, has a magnificent view of the Pacamayo Valley, and Sayacmarca, a maze-like ruin perched atop a sheer cliff at about 11,600 feet, is reachable only by a long stone staircase. Puyupatamarca, aptly named “Town in the Clouds” by Hiram Bingham, has ingenious stone baths and incredible views of the Urubamba Valley. Our fantastic camp just above this ruin has panoramas of majestic Humantay (19,239') and Salcantay (20,390'). Throughout our Inca Trail experience, our camp staff and talented camp cooks provide Wilderness Travel’s famous full-service camping amenities.
Days 7-8 Machu Picchu
On the morning of Day 7, we hike through the Gate of the Sun and feast our eyes on one of the most stunning sights in the world. Our overnight at Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge, set right at the ruins, allows us easy walking access to Machu Picchu. We return to Cusco by train the next afternoon.
Day 9 Cusco
After a half-day exploration of Cusco’s cultural and artistic riches, we have a free afternoon to explore, and a final night at the lovely Hotel Monasterio.
Day 10 Lima
We fly to Lima and depart on evening flights, or join our Arequipa Extension
Arequipa and Colca Canyon Extension Days 10-14
Explore colonial Arequipa, with its elaborate Spanish architecture of pearly white volcanic stone, and hike in the dramatic river gorge of the Colca Canyon, twice as deep as the Grand Canyon.
