Challenging Hikes and Comfortable Hotels in the Realm of the Incas

Hiker’s Journey to Machu Picchu

The Sacred Valley of the Incas is a dramatic mountain landscape, walled by granite crags and the snow peaks of the Cordillera Urubamba. The Incas placed their sacred sites high above their beloved valley and the crown jewel, Machu Picchu, is perched on a promontory at its easternmost reaches. Our hotel-based journey is a true hiker’s adventure leading us on spectacular hikes to ridgetop Inca sites accessible only on foot and to traditional Quechua hamlets. Our grand finale is exploring the “lost city” and hiking the trails that surround the Machu Picchu citadel. Our overnight at Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge, right at the ruins, gives us a chance to see Machu Picchu silhouetted beneath a star-filled sky.

Itinerary-in-Brief

Days 1-2
Cusco

Our wonderful introduction to the Inca world is a hike from the fortress of Saqsayhuaman to the imperial baths of Tambo Machay and down to Cusco, center of the Inca Empire. Overnights at the 5-star Hotel Monasterio.

Days 3-4
Sacred Valley / Huchuy Qosqo / Pisac

Stunning perspectives of the mountain-ringed Urubamba Valley are ours as we hike to fascinating Huchuy Qosqo, an Inca ruin accessible only to hikers. The next day’s hike brings us from a ridgetop village down to fantastic Pisac, a famous temple ruin clinging to a mountain spur. After a picnic with views across the Urubamba Valley, we continue on foot to the colonial town of Pisac.

Days 5-6
Sacred Valley / Ollantaytambo

Hiking from colonial Maras down to the Urubamba River, we pass Inca salt mines terraced into hundreds of saline pools. Our route the following day crosses a spectacular 15,000-foot pass among herds of llamas and alpacas to a traditional highland village for a pachamanca feast. Our explorations include the majestic Inca fortress at Ollantaytambo. Hotel overnights in the valley.

Days 7-9
Hiking Machu Picchu

At Machu Picchu, one of the most mystical settings in the world, our hiking options include the ruins of Wiñay Wayna and the Inca Bridge. Overnight at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge, right at the ruins. Return to Cusco late on Day 8 and depart on Day 9.
