Hidden Mountain Trails and Golden Beaches of the Cyclades

Hiking in the Greek Isles

Greece casts a spell, with its honey-colored isles fragrant with frangipani and encircled by azure seas. In the stunning beauty of the Cyclades Islands, we head out for unforgettable mountain hikes on the craggy green island of Tinos, on dramatic Naxos, on rugged Amorgos, a tranquil world of bougainvillea-draped hill villages above the gleaming Aegean, and on unforgettable Santorini. We follow stone paths past blue-domed churches, up to cliff-perched monasteries, and through tiny white-washed villages as we explore a civilization that reaches back to 4,000 BC. The “good life” of sunblessed Greece surrounds us every day on this journey, with picnics on wildflower-covered hills, swims in a marvelous blue sea, and meals al fresco on the verandas of village tavernas.

Itinerary-in-Brief

Days 1-3
Athens / Tinos / Delos / Mykonos

After exploring Athens, we ferry to Tinos for a hike on an old Roman road through a series of beautiful hill villages, including Tarabados with its old windmills, then head further up to reach a Byzantine castle with fantastic views across the Aegean. We can cool off with a refreshing swim in the afternoon. The next day, we head to the sacred island of Delos to stroll in an open-air archaeological museum of wildflower-covered ruins. We also visit Mykonos, with its signature windmills.

Days 4-5
Naxos / Chora / Zas Mountain

We cross the blue Aegean to Naxos, Lord Byron’s favorite Greek island, with its rolling vineyards and olive groves. We enjoy an afternoon walk on the steep, twisting lanes of Chora, the main town, graced with a charming and distinguished Venetian design. Zas (3,000') is the highest peak on Naxos, and we hike up its slopes to a sacred cave with a marvelous view. According to Greek mythology, it is the spot where the god Zeus was born.

Days 6-10
Amorgos / Tholaria

On beautiful Amorgos, our hotel is in the ancient hill village of Tholaria, with its white-washed houses and tiled archways. Traditional footpaths connect the villages and provide us with wonderful hikes. One of our hikes leads us up to the great monastery of Agios Theologos and along spectacular cliffs above the Aegean. Another takes us up to Mt. Krikelos (2,200'), one of the three peaks crowning the island, with a descent to the beautiful beach at Egiali.

Days 11-13
Santorini

On the volcano-island of Santorini, the magnificent capital, Thira, is perched on a cliff over the blue sea. We walk the narrow streets of the Bronze Age settlement of Akrotiri and hike on the still-active volcano on Nea Kameni. Depart on Day 13.
