The Alhambra, Ronda, and the White Villages of Southern Spain
Granada to Sevilla
Southern Spain holds two impossibly romantic cities: Granada, with its extraordinary Alhambra Palace, and vibrant, passionate Sevilla, home of flamenco and bullfighting. In between these cultural capitals, we hike through glorious landscapes to tranquil pueblos blancos, the dazzling white-washed villages of Andalucia, with their Iberian, Roman, and Moorish heritage. We begin in Las Alpujarras, with the scent of wild herbs in the air, hiking back in time amid tiny hamlets festooned with roses. Our westward arc brings us into the Sierra de Grazalema mountains, where atmospheric white villages include Grazalema, with its narrow alleys and balconies overflowing with flowers, and mountain-perched Ronda, one of the most spectacular towns in the world, its architecture a striking reminder of the multi-layered history of southern Spain.

Itinerary-in-Brief
Days 1-2 Granada / Las Alpujarras / Bubión
We explore Granada’s legendary Alhambra Palace, one of Europe’s most romantic monuments, then head to Las Alpujarras, a lovely region of mountain villages clinging to the southern flanks of the Sierra Nevada. With our local muleteer, we head out for a day’s hike through the dramatic landscapes of the Poqueira Gorge, where almond, orange, and olive groves terrace the hillsides. Our hike ends in tiny Pampaneira, a town of flowers, fountains, and a pretty central square. Overnights are in the lovely mountain village of Bubión.
Days 3-4 Ronda
After a morning hike in the Taha de Pitres, seven Arab-style villages connected by narrow footpaths used since Roman times, we head to ancient Ronda. One of the most iconic of Andalucia’s pueblos blancos, Ronda boasts a breathtaking perch atop an angular mountain. The surrounding landscape is harmonious, bucolic, and extremely inviting for walking. One of our hikes starts right from town and brings us through an exquisite landscape to the Mozarabic chapel of La Virgen de la Cabeza. We also visit Ronda’s Roman theater, Moorish palace, and 18th century plaza de toros, Spain’s first bullring. Our accommodation is the luxurious Parador de Ronda, adjoining Ronda’s historic Town Hall with a breathtaking location overlooking the river gorge.
Days 5-6 Sierra de Grazalema
Sierra de Grazalema National Park, a Biosphere Reserve, is a landscape of majestic cork oak and ancient fir trees that shelters some of Spain’s rarest flora and fauna. It also holds about a dozen of Spain’s most spectacular traditional villages. From the tranquil “white village” of Benaojan, isolated among stony pastures and high peaks, we hike along fragrant senderos (trails), ramble through remote woodlands, and head along the Rio Guadiaro through a beautiful canyon of white limestone. Overnights are in Grazalema, one of the most striking of Spain’s pueblos blancos and headquarters for Sierra de Grazalema National Park.
Days 7-8 Sevilla / Flamenco
The elegant Andalucian capital is a city of artists and poets, of jasmine-scented gardens and Moorish monuments. We savor the setting of small, exquisite plazas and narrow streets and enjoy a festive flamenco show in the labyrinthine Barrio de Santa Cruz. There’s no better place in the world to experience flamenco. Depart on Day 8.
