Spectacular Alaskan Wildlife, Whale Watching, Sea Kayaking, and Hiking
Hidden Glacier Bay
The ultimate way to experience the wilderness wonders of Glacier Bay is from a small, private expedition vessel. Aboard the 12-passenger 97-foot M/V Sea Wolf, we’ll feel as if we have Glacier Bay to ourselves as we anchor in hidden coves, walk on massive tidewater glaciers, and kayak through pristine turquoise waters. The wildlife is as spectacular as the scenery, with Steller sea lions congregating on rocky islands, harbor porpoises feeding along the shores, and bald eagles peering down at us from giant spruce snags at water’s edge. Our Trip Leaders bring the natural history of this epic landscape to life, and each evening, we relax in the cozy warmth of our historic ship, wildlife watching from the deck during the long Alaskan twilight.

Itinerary-in-Brief
Day 1 Gustavus / Reid Glacier
Embarking from Bartlett Cove, just outside Gustavus, we head up the bay to Reid Glacier, a journey filled with incredible vistas and acrobatic whales in the waters. At Reid Glacier, with its bluest of blue ice, we kayak ashore to hike onto the ice and learn about curious “ice worms” and the ebb and flow of glaciers. A dinner of fresh Alaskan specialties awaits us on board this evening.
Day 2 Lamplough Glacier / Johns Hopkins Inlet / Margerie Glacier
Heading up the bay, we hike alongside Lamplough Glacier for a bird’s eye view of the top of a glacier, a truly spectacular sight. Back on board, we enjoy lunch with views of Johns Hopkins Inlet, edged by nine glaciers. The ice crashes and eagles soar as we drift in this breathtaking inlet with its three types of glaciers: hanging, valley, and tidewater. Once inside Tarr Inlet, where the Grand Pacific and Margerie glaciers cascade into the water, we enjoy a wonderful paddle along a sheer cliff with a kittiwake and puffin rookery. We also paddle in front of Margerie Glacier, with its 250-foot-high icewall, for the breathtaking experience of watching from a safe distance an active, calving glacier.
Day 3 Tidal Inlet / North Sandy Cove
At Tidal Inlet, we enjoy a beautiful paddle past craggy bluffs, forested hillsides, and impressive shimmering waterfalls cascading on both sides of us. Later, we’re off to North Sandy Cove, a rich ecosystem with a plentiful marine environment. Here we often see whales as well as sea lions, porpoises, and seals feeding as we kayak around the shores. Paddling back to the Sea Wolf, we look across to the stunning views of the snow-capped Fairweather Mountains, topped by Mt. Fairweather at 15,320 feet.
Day 4 Dundas Bay
We anchor at the mouth of Dundas Bay. With its many islands and calm shoals, this is an absolutely exquisite spot yet it is rarely visited. Wildlife at Dundas Bay includes sea and river otters, marmots, and moose. Birdlife abounds, from eagles to cormorants to cranes. We stroll the beach watching wildlife, intertidal foraging, and tasting the beach plants that animals subsist on, then head back to the boat for a short journey further up the bay, learning about the native history and lore of this area. En route back down to the head of the bay, we can enjoy a splendid leisurely kayak excursion, scanning the shores for moose as we paddle past flower-strewn meadows.
Days 5-6 Inner Dundas Bay / Whale Watching
In inner Dundas Bay, we explore by skiff then walk through Sitka spruce and up a little ways on the mountainside to learn about a mature muskeg bog. Bog plants include orchids, an insect-eating plant called a sundew, as well as stunted spruce, hemlock, marsh marigolds, and violets. We find a beautiful anchorage for our last night, listening to the whales blowing, sea lions barking, and myriad waterfalls rushing. After a morning of whale watching, we disembark and depart via Gustavus on Day 6.
