Join us on this spectacular trek across the Kuari Pass in the legendary Garhwal Himalaya, home to hundreds of peaks over 20,000 feet and the traditional abode of Hindu deities. We enter that rarified realm ourselves as we follow pilgrim trails through luxuriant mountain meadows and ancient pristine forests of rhododendron, oak, and deodar pine, camping near lovely Himalayan villages where time seems to stand still. All the while we feast our eyes on some of the most spectacular panoramas in the Himalaya—a gigantic sweep of icy mountains from Trisul (23,496') and Kamet (25,595') to the legendary twin peaks of Nanda Devi (25,645'), the “forbidden mountain.” For off-the-beaten-path exploration in an enchanting Himalayan landscape, you won’t find anything better.

After exploring Delhi, we travel to Rudraprayag via the temple town of Rishikesh, set along the Ganges River.
From the village of Kuling, we begin our trek with a hike down into the rhododendron and oak forests of the Gyan Ganga Valley, then up sharply to emerge above treeline with wonderful views of the Garhwal Himalaya. From a high meadow campsite dotted with shrines and temples, we take a day hike to Bhogubasa (13,451'), a stone shelter used by pilgrims.
We continue our trek, passing through lovely old villages and pausing at sacred groves, shrines, and small temples. We hike through forests where monkeys romp and past summer pastures where sheep and goats graze, down into wild river gorges, and up to high ridges with incredible views of the snowy peaks of the Garhwal. En route we cross the Kuari Pass (12,200'), which offers one of the most splendid mountain views in the world, with the stupendous arc of Kamet, Nilkanth, Dunagiri, Changabang, and Nanda Devi spread before us. Most of our camps are near unspoiled villages where we can gain insights into the traditional ways that still thrive in these mountain realms. We end our trek at Auli.
A day’s drive brings us back to Rishikesh for an overnight before departing for Delhi. Depart Delhi very early in the morning of Day 18 or join our optional extension.
Explore the incomparable Taj Mahal, the “ghost town” of Fatehpur Sikri, and the pink city of Jaipur.
