Active Cruise in Darwin’s Enchanted Isles

Galápagos Adventure

The peaceful Eden of the Galápagos Islands is a place unlike any other on earth. Set on the Equator 600 miles off the coast of South America and recognized as a World Heritage Site, this is the legendary place where the young naturalist Charles Darwin, traveling on the research vessel HMS Beagle, made the first observations that would lead to his revolutionary theory of evolution. Today these mysterious islands provide one of nature’s most thrilling wildlife experiences. We savor the wonder, exploring a new island each day as our fantastic naturalist guide brings this unique world to life. Our journey explores many islands, each with distinct species and landscapes, as we enjoy unforgettable days of hiking, snorkeling, and sea kayaking adventures.

Below is an Itinerary-in-Brief. To view a complete Detailed Itinerary, Download Full Itinerary or Email our Area Specialist

Itinerary-in-Brief

For our Galápagos Adventure journey, we offer two different island itineraries. One itinerary visits the Western Islands of the archipelago and the other visits the Eastern Islands. Check the dates of your cruise to see which island itinerary it features.

*Please note that this itinerary-in-brief is for the 2008 Eastern Islands Itinerary on the Sagitta & Diamante only. Please call for details on the Western Island itinerary, the Mary Anne and the 2009 season.

Days 1-2
Quito

We meet in Quito and enjoy an afternoon visit to the charming colonial quarter, with its classic plazas and ornate churches.

Days 3-4
Galpagos Cruise / North Seymour / Plazas / Santa Cruz

Theres a world of wonder in Darwins bewitching islandson land as well as in the sea. We fly out to the islands and sail to North Seymour Island for a hike among prehistoric-looking marine iguanas, Darwins imps of darkness. On South Plaza Island, we see one of the Galapagos largest populations of land iguanas. Heading to Santa Cruz, we visit the Darwin Research Station, with its museum and tortoise breeding facility, then head up to the lush highlands for a chance to see Galpagos tortoises in the wild.

Days 5-6
Galapagos Cruise / Española / Floreana / Santa Cruz

The striking isle of Espanola (Hood) has the largest known colony of waved albatross from April to November. As we hike above the huge cliffs at Punta Suarez, we should spot sky-pointing blue-footed boobies and huge lava lizards along with red-billed tropicbirds and marine iguanas. After our hikes, we swim and snorkel in the blue waters of Gardner Bay, where Galápagos sea lions cavort and green sea turtles nest in the dunes. On Floreana, known for its fascinating human history, we land at Punta Cormorant, with its large colony of flamingos. Galapagos penguins rest on the rocks, while red-billed tropicbirds nest on the cliffs. On our hikes here, we often see Galapagos ducks and shorebirds from ruddy turnstones to phalaropes. On Santa Cruz, we visit Puerto Ayora and the museum and tortoise breeding facility of the Darwin Research Station, with a hotel overnight on Day 6.
