Sherpa Villages, Tengboche Monastery, and the Magic of Everest

Everest Adventure

The legendary peak of Everest dwarfs other mountains in many ways, from its legacy as mountaineering’s ultimate prize to the spiritual esteem in which the Sherpa people hold it. We set out on a magnificent 10-day trek through the ancient Sherpa villages cradled below Chomolungma, Mother Goddess of the Snows, culminating in our visit to thriving Tengboche Monastery, heart of the Khumbu, from which Everest’s triangular diamond summit is unmistakable amid a cirque of breathtaking peaks. Much of the joy of this spectacular trek is getting to know the Sherpa people, visiting Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and lively trailside teahouses, sipping homemade chang (beer made from barley) with new-found friends, and learning how Tibetan Buddhism influences every aspect of Sherpa life.

Itinerary-in-Brief

Days 1-2
Kathmandu, Nepal

We explore the labyrinth of the city’s famed bazaars and visit golden temples where Buddhist and Hindu iconography mix in fantastic ways.

Days 3-6
Lukla / Namche Bazaar / Khunde / Khumjung

Flying to Lukla (9,350'), we trek to Namche Bazaar (11,270'), a Sherpa trading village set in a dramatic U-shaped amphitheater, with an exploration day for acclimatization and an optional hike. At the classic twin villages of Khunde and Khumjung (12,400'), where many of our Sherpa friends live, we visit the school built by Sir Edmund Hillary’s Himalayan Trust.

Days 7-9
Phortse / Pangboche

We head through rhododendron forests to the tranquil village of Phortse and further up to Pangboche (12,600'), the Khumbu’s highest year-round settlement, which houses the region’s oldest monastery. At the famous Tengboche Monastery (12,500'), the glimpse of Everest’s striking summit is tantalizing.
