The Lake District, the Patagonian Outback, and Glacier National Park

Estancias of Patagonia

From the volcanoes of the lush, forested north to the vast steppes of the Patagonian “Outback,” we take the road less traveled on this lodge-based odyssey. We begin in Chile, with hikes in the green beauty of the Lake District, then head into western Argentina and off the map! Following remote ripios (rural roads), we explore the spectacular mountain country that forms the border between Chile and Argentina. Out here we find a stunning landscape of big skies and soaring, ice-capped peaks where the hiking is great, the wildlife is amazing, and the welcome is warm. Remote lodges and estancias (ranches) provide our accommodation. Our journey concludes in grand fashion with hikes below mighty Mt. Fitzroy (11,703') in world-famous Glacier National Park. This is Patagonian adventure the old-fashioned way!

Itinerary-in-Brief

Days 1-3
Puerto Montt / Osorno / Alerce Andino National Park

Chile’s Lake District is a land of cone-shaped volcanoes and ancient conifer forests. We hike on Volcano Osorno (8,700'), icon of the Lake District, and in a temperate rainforest of alerce trees, the Southern Hemisphere’s equivalent of the redwood.

Days 4-6
Lago Posado and Lago Pueyrredón

We enter Argentina and head out on spectacular Ruta 41, only open to the public for the last decade. Our day hikes offer amazing panoramas of southern Patagonia’s vast and gorgeous mountain lakes, including lapis-blue Lago Posado and jade-green Lago Pueyrredón, side by side in a magnificent glacier valley. In this wide-open landscape, we look for Patagonia’s wildlife, including troops of guanacos (the wild cousin of the alpaca), rheas, foxes, and soaring Andean condors. Overnights are in the little town of Lago Posadas.

Days 7-9
Estancia Oriental / Perito Moreno National Park

Perito Moreno National Park, where 11,118-foot Cerro San Lorenzo dominates the skyline, is an undiscovered jewel and the wildest of Patagonia’s national parks. Our ridgetop hikes bring stunning views of glacier-covered San Lorenzo and panoramas of brilliantly colored glacial lakes that attract flamingos, black-necked swans, and other waterfowl. Our accommodation, right in the heart of Perito Moreno National Park, is Estancia La Oriental. This working sheep ranch has been in the same family for generations.

Days 10-12
Glacier National Park

In Glacier National Park, a World Heritage Site that protects some of the most impressive mountain scenery on the planet, we enjoy stunning hikes with perspectives of Fitzroy and the needle-like spike of Cerro Torre (10,280'). Overnights at a lodge in El Chaltén.

Days 13-15
Calafate / Buenos Aires

After a last hike in the park, we return to Calafate to visit famous Perito Moreno Glacier, with its icebergs crashing into Lago Argentino. Depart via Buenos Aires on Day 15.
