Spectacular Hikes, with two Options a Day

Hiking in the Western Dolomites

The Western Dolomites feature a stunning landscape of formidable rock peaks that must be seen to be believed. In a glorious world of sheer rock walls, we hike trails to spectacular viewpoints and traverse forested valleys and sundappled meadows to timeless villages. The ancient heritage of the South Tyrol pervades this mountain world where the age-old Ladin tongue is still heard in high valleys and apple strudel and wienerschnitzel are as popular as tiramisu and cappuccino. With up to three Trip Leaders, we offer at least two hiking options every day, including adventurous options along high routes. We stay in wonderful hotels in the mountains plus one overnight in a high mountain chalet with an incredible setting.

Itinerary-in-Brief

Day 1
Bolzano / The Iceman

In Bolzano, we pay our respects to Otzi, the Iceman, a Copper Age mummy whose discovery in 1991 captured the world. This 5,300-year-old man, with bow, quiver, and dagger in hand, was discovered by hikers in a nearby glacier at 10,000 feet.

Days 2-4
Rosengarten / Latemar Massif / Sella Massif

From our delightful countryside hotel, with its panoramas of sunset falling across the Rosengarten and Latemar spires, we hike among the towering rock faces and eerie pinnacles of the Rosengarten Dolomites, a spectacular collection of peaks named for its rose-red hues at dusk. Two hiking options are available every day, including a route through the fantastic Latemar Labyrinth, an enchanting maze of pinnacles, needles, and massive blocks of rock.

Day 5
Alpengasthof Dialer

We hike up to the wonderfully situated Alpengasthof Dialer, a mountain lodge at 7,000 feet, right up in the high peaks. It is a marvelous place to savor the high mountain ambience and unforgettable views.

Days 6-8
Val Gardena / St. Ulrich

We descend into the most Ladin of all valleys, the Val Gardena, for a grand finale of hiking on trails below the mighty Sassolungo and Sasso Piatto summits and a panoramic traverse high above the valley. Overnights are in St. Ulrich, a peaceful town between the Ladin-speaking Val Gardena and the German-speaking Val di Funes. Depart on Day 8 via Bolzano.
