Beautiful Hikes, Timeless Villages, Cesky Krumlov, and Enchanting Prague

Czech Castles & Country Walks

Fairytale castles built by feudal lords reign over the lush countryside and traditional villages of the Czech Republic. There’s hardly a better place in Europe for a journey built around country walks, and many of our hikes begin and end at wondrous castles. The medieval heritage of this vibrant nation is enchanting and beautifully intact, especially in towns like Cesky Krumlov, a World Heritage Site little changed since medieval times, and in tiny Telc, one of the bestpreserved 16th century villages in all Europe, which we first glimpse as we enter its arched gates at the end of a memorable day’s hike. Our journey begins in magnificent Vienna and concludes in Prague, the jewel of Bohemia, one of the world’s most beautiful cities.

Itinerary-in-Brief

Days 1-3
Vienna / Palava Highlands / Cejkovice

After a walking tour of Vienna, we hike across the onceforbidden border from Austria into the Czech Republic. Our first castletocastle hike is in the Palava Highlands Nature Reserve. Overnights are in Hlohovec in a converted 19th century chateau built by the Liechtenstein family and surrounded by rolling vineyards.

Days 4-5
Telc / Slavonice

Starting from the Gothic apparition of Castle Rostejn, we hike across the countryside to Telc, one of the bestpreserved Renaissance towns in all of Europe. The town’s wedgeshaped main square looks like a stage set, with Renaissance arcades and Gothic houses of subtle pastel colors. Another hike brings us from Telc Castle to medieval Slavonice, just meters from the Austrian border. Our charming hotel is situated directly on Telc’s perfect main square.

Days 6-8
Sumava Forest / Cesky Krumlov

In rural southern Bohemia, we hike through the Sumava Forest to the castle town of Rozmberk, built around the serpentine curves of the Vltava River. We enjoy three overnights in the visually stunning World Heritage town of Cesky Krumlov, like a miniature Prague. Its dreamy pink and green castle towers above 15th century Renaissance and baroque homes, winding stone alleys, foot bridges, and medieval squares touched by legend.

Days 9-10
Prague

Prague’s compactness and treasury of architecture, from Renaissance to Cubist, make it great for a walking tour. Depart on Day 10 or extend your stay in Prague.
