Hike Rainforest Trails, Ride a Zip Line, Sea Kayak on the Blue Pacific

Costa Rica Adventure

Beauty abounds in the tropical paradise of Costa Rica, from jungle-draped volcanoes to the sweeping expanses of wilderness beaches along the azure Pacific. We explore from the mountains to the sea, beginning with Arenal, the quintessential tropical volcano rising from jungled highlands, then explore the treetop canopy of a private rainforest by way of thrilling zip lines and spectacular hanging bridges. On Costa Rica’s idyllic Pacific Coast, Manuel Antonio National Park protects some of the most stunning beaches in Central America. We explore the park’s lagoons by sea kayak, hike through coastal forests that are home to monkeys and coatimundis, and head out by catamaran for snorkeling and exciting dolphin sightings.

Itinerary-in-Brief

Days 1-3
San Jose / Arenal Volcano National Park

From San Jose, we head to Nectandra Cloud Forest, a biological preserve, to walk lovely trails through primary and secondary forest. We continue to lush Arenal Volcano National Park, where the perfect cone of Arenal Volcano rises to 5,300 feet. Sacred to the pre-Columbian people, Arenal lay dormant during the colonial era, then became active in 1968 with a spectacular eruption. The volcano is most spectacular at night, when its red lava flows glow in the sky. From our lovely lodge overlooking Arenal, we hike, soak in hot springs, and explore the rainforest setting amid the playful sounds of toucans and howler monkeys. Highlights include a walk on spectacular hanging bridges into the orchid-draped treetop canopy and a hike to thundering La Fortuna waterfall.

Day 4
Canopy Walk and Zip Line / Hotel Parador

En route to Manuel Antonio National Park, we visit a private forest reserve where we can try our hand at Costa Rica’s popular adventure sport—the canopy zip line. Clipping into a series of steel cables rigged among the trees, we fly across the canopy among huge kapok and elephant-ear trees for an exhilarating experience of the treetop world. We get a bird’s-eye view of the canopy environment, where 90 percent of the rainforest wildlife lives. We continue to our accommodation, Hotel Parador, set on its own peninsula overlooking the blue Pacific near Manuel Antonio National Park. This lush park offers a magnificent setting of crescent beaches, secluded bays, forested bluffs, and offshore islands.

Days 5-7
Manuel Antonio National Park

Our Pacific Ocean setting offers us gorgeous tropical forests and turquoise seas edged by white-sand beaches. We set out for a morning of exploration by kayak in some of the most beautiful coastal estuaries and mangroves in the country. Kayaking is a perfect way to view wildlife up-close. At sunset, we head out by catamaran for a snorkeling excursion, with the backdrop of a tropical sky turning pink and orange. Sea turtles, flying fish, and birdlife including boobies and frigatebirds share this beautiful environment with the many dolphins that frolic and play along this coast. We also hike trails through the forests of Manuel Antonio National Park, with its treetop canopy full of howler monkeys, toucans, and iguanas, and beachcomb along the shores. Depart on Day 7 via San Jose, or join our Whitewater Rafting Extension.
