Close your eyes and imagine a world of soaring limestone mountains with spectacular rock faces, alpine meadows sprinkled with wildflowers, deep blue-green lakes, and swirls of streams and waterfalls. Now, open them—and discover this hiker’s paradise! Our journey cuts a swath from Garmisch, nestled at the foot of the mighty Zugspitze in the heart of the Bavarian Alps, to the mountain-ringed city of Innsbruck in the Tyrol. On many days we enjoy flexible hiking options that allow us to experience it all at moderate or challenging levels, while fine dining and overnights in comfortable, 4- and 5-star traditional hotels (and one atmospheric mountain lodge) top off each unforgettable day.

Itinerary-in-Brief

Days 1-3
Garmisch, Germany / Mittenwald / Bavarian Alps

We meet in Garmisch, Germany’s premier alpine ski resort that becomes a hiker’s paradise after the snow melts in the spring. Superbly situated in a wide valley beneath the amazing Zugspitze (9,721'), Germany’s highest mountain, Garmisch offers a variety of great hiking trails in the surrounding foothills and mountains. With at least two Trip Leaders, we can usually choose between two hiking options each day. From Garmisch, one of our options includes a strenuous hike in the spectacular Hollentalklamm Gorge along a steep, narrow, and rocky trail, all the while accompanied by the thunderous roar of water as it twists and tumbles through its rocky constraints.

Day 4
Karwendelhaus Lodge

A moderate or strenuous hike (your choice) takes us to the fantastic Karwendelhaus, a wonderful traditional alpine lodge located in the heart of the Tyrol. Here we can relax and enjoy the ambient gemutlichkeit (roughly translated: a sense of belonging and social acceptance) with other hikers and sample the local cuisine, including the sinfully delicious Sachertorte, a prime example of the decadent desserts this part of the world is famous for!

Days 5-6
Seefeld, Austria / Tyrolean Alps

A choice of hiking options leads us across the border into Austria and the charming town of Seefeld, perched on a sunny plateau high above the Inn Valley, with its traditional picture-perfect villages of geranium-bedecked chalets and tranquil meadows where fat cattle graze. Nearby are the impressive Wetterstein and Karwendel Mountains, the setting for another exhilarating hike on varying terrain with spectacular mountain views. Two nights at a 5-star hotel. Gourmet dinners provide the perfect complement to our invigorating days on the trail.

Days 7-8
Innsbruck, Austria

We hike up a magnificent valley through alpine pasturelands nestled between towering mountains, passing through a serene landscape of Tyrolean farms, alpine meadows, and beautiful wildflowers. We continue on a high-level trail with breathtaking views across the Inn Valley and up onto the summit of the Hafelkar-spitze (7,700'), perched high on a sheer north face above Innsbruck. We board a nearby cable car and make a vertical descent of some 5,600 feet directly into Innsbruck, Tyrol’s capital, where we explore its medieval city center before departing by train on Day 8.
