Up-close whale encounters & sea kayaking in Baja

Magdalena Bay Whale-Watching & the Sea of Cortez

FEW WILDLIFE EXPERIENCES in the world match the excitement of seeing a 40-ton whale eye to eye and snorkeling with sea lions! Our wildlife adventure in Baja combines three days of fantastic sea kayaking in the Sea of Cortez with three days of up-close whale watching in Bahia Magdalena, the major breeding ground for California gray whales, where we are surrounded by these magnificent, gentle giants. Closely observed by biologists since the 1970s, the whales are accustomed to the presence of humans and although we can’t promise it, they often approach our boats and visit. During our sea kakaying adventures in the Sea of Cortez, we snorkel amid a rainbow of tropical fish and paddle in brilliant turquoise waters among friendly sea lions and dancing dolphins. This is the ultimate Baja trip, combining one of the most incredible wildlife encounters on the planet with the chance to experience the magnificent beauty of the Sea of Cortez.

Itinerary-in-Brief

Days 1-2
La Paz / Isla Espiritu Santo

From the colonial town of La Paz, we head to our base camp on Isla Espiritu Santo for our first kayaking adventure. Paddling stable sea kayaks is easy and fun, and no previous experience is necessary. Our silent kayaks allow us to approach wildlife closely.

Days 3-4
Snorkeling & Sea Kayaking

From our camp on a pristine bach, we savor a peaceful rhythm of sea kayaking, snorkeling, hiking, and beachcombing along the shores of this desert wilderness. The island's empty white-sand beaches, secluded coves, rugged, multi-colored cliffs, and thickly vegetated canyons spiked with colorful cactus add to its dramatic beauty. As we kayak, we are often escorted by dozens of leaping dolphins!

Days 5-7
Bahia Magdalena Whale Watching

Heading to Baja's Pacific coast, we explore by panga (motorized skiff) among the mother and baby California gray whales. Gray whales complete one of the epic migrations on the planet, traveling 10,000 to 14,000 miles round-trip every year from the krill-rich waters of Alaska to the warm Pacific bays of Baja, where they give birth in calm lagoons. We also have plenty of time to birdwatch and sea kayak in mangrove estuaries. Sunset at our beach camp provides a magnificent blaze of copper and gold, with night skies offering a panorama of stars.

Days 8-9
La Paz

After our final encounter with the gray whales of Baja, we head back to La Paz and depart on Day 9.
