Snorkel with Sea Lions, Hike in Desert Canyons, Camp on Pristine Beaches

Sea Kayaking in Baja

With thousands of miles of glorious untouched beaches, desert peaks rising from crystal-clear bays, and a wonderful abundance of marine wildlife, Baja’s Sea of Cortez has been declared a World Heritage Site. It’s a magnificent place to explore by sea kayak, and our Baja adventure is wonderfully active, with daily opportunities for sea kayaking, snorkeling, and hiking, plus the unforgettable experience of swimming and snorkeling with sea lions. At our comfortable beach camps on pristine islands, we awake to a desert-hued sunrise, and at night, we sip cold margaritas, watch the sky turn vermilion, and luxuriate in the warm desert night under a sky ablaze with stars. The protected waters of the Sea of Cortez are perfect for first-time kayakers.

Itinerary-in-Brief

Days 1-4
La Paz / Isla San Jose / Isla San Francisco

From lovely colonial La Paz, we boat to our spectacular beach camp on the exquisite island of San Jose, with the sheer Sierra Giganta mountains as a backdrop. Exploring between Isla San Jose and Isla San Francisco, we immerse ourselves in Baja’s superbly rich environment. Our daily schedule is delightful: we kayak, hike, or snorkel for several hours each morning, with afternoons for optional kayaking or hiking. A support skiff and camp staff accompany us throughout our journey, and our camp cuisine is delicious, from beach barbecues of fresh fish to grilled steak tacos with homemade guacamole.

Days 5-8
Espiritu Santo / Snorkel with Sea Lions / La Paz

For a grand finale, we head to Espiritu Santo, the most beautiful island in the Sea of Cortez, with its desert canyons adorned with beautiful fig trees. En route we snorkel and swim with playful sea lions at Los Islotes. Espiritu Santo’s incredible displays of wildlife include seabirds, leaping dolphins, and an underwater kaleidoscope of azure parrot fish, Cortez rainbow wrasse, and bright red starfish. We head back to La Paz on Day 7. Depart on Day 8.
