The soaring Himalayas have the sheerest rise from subtropical foothills to icy summits of any mountain range on earth. In the Annapurnas of Nepal, this contrast is famously breathtaking, with snowy peaks shimmering in the cobalt sky above forests of giant rhododendrons. We experience this natural beauty an idyllic way—on a lodge-to-lodge trek, under the gaze of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Machapuchare as we hike village to village on beautiful mountain trails. Along the way, our charming lodges offer private rooms, en suite baths, hot showers, and amazing views. Our adventure concludes with a float trip on the Seti River and exciting gameviewing by elephant in the forests of Royal Chitwan National Park, haunt of the Bengal tiger. This journey is the perfect introduction to the spectacular, multi-faceted world of Nepal.

After a day to explore the temples and bazaars of Kathmandu, we fly to Pokhara and head into the Annapurna foothills with our guides and porters. Hiking a ridgeline with fantastic panoramas, we contour above the Modi Khola Valley to our first lodge, with the sacred peak of Machapuchare (22,943'), the “Fishtail Peak,” dominating the skyline. The next day we hike through mountain hamlets, terraced rice fields, and rhododendron forests to reach Ghandrung (6,600'), a large Gurung village of slate-roofed houses and winding lanes. From our lodge near this beautiful village, the Gurung “capital,” we enjoy a full day to explore, with the peaks of Himalchuli and the Annapurnas as a backdrop. Many generations of Gurung men from this village have served in Britain’s legendary Gurkha Regiments.
Lush subtropical scenery surrounds us as we hike along the Modi Khola, visiting Lamakhet, with its lovely riverside setting, and the picturesque and little-visited hamlets of Majhgaun and then Patleket, where we visit a local school. On Day 8, we descend through magnolia woods to the Pokhara Valley. We overnight at Shangri La Village Resort, enjoying our last Annapurna panoramas from its gardens.
On the Seti River, which has no road access, we enjoy a relaxing rafting journey, watching village life along the banks as well as the abundant variety of birds. The remote villages here see few outsiders. Overnight at a well-appointed safari-style river camp, with dinner around an open fire.
Royal Chitwan National Park is one of the finest wildlife sanctuaries in Asia, its riverine forest, grasslands, and tall stands of sal trees home to endangered one-horned rhinos, Bengal tigers, and leopards. With a night at famous Tiger Tops Lodge and two nights at Tiger Tops Tented Camp, we enjoy gameviewing a unique way—by elephant, getting an elephant’s-eye view as we explore the forests of the park. Return to Kathmandu on Day 13 and depart Day 15.
