How We Travel

For 29 Years, People Have Been Entrusting Their Travel Dreams to Us Wilderness Travel was launched in 1978 with a handful of unusual Andean treks and expeditions into the far reaches of the Amazon. Since those pioneering days we have grown to offer innovative journeys on all seven continents. Over the years, our rigorous standards for quality have earned us one of the highest rates of repeat travelers in the business. Maybe that’s because our core philosophy has remained the same for decades: it’s not just where you travel but how you travel that makes all the difference. The “how” at Wilderness Travel hinges on expert Trip Leaders—the best in the business—a meticulously planned itinerary, and the camaraderie of a small group.

We Offer Hand-Crafted and Artfully Executed Itineraries Itinerary design, done well, is an art form, and it makes all of the difference to your experience. Our journeys are carefully designed to capture the very best of each particular destination. You travel at an appropriate pace, stay in the most charming, well-located inns or most spectacular camping sites, enjoy introductions to fascinating local people, and make discoveries of off-the-beaten-path gems—hidden villages, secret footpaths, special hikes—that only an insider could know about.

No Matter How Remote the Destination, We Bring the Good Life Along Even though some of our trips go to very remote places and include camping, we make sure you enjoy plenty of comforts. In the Andes and Himalayas, you have a full camp staff at your service and camp amenities like dining tents and hot coffee or tea brought to your tent each morning. In Africa, our mobile safari camps are downright luxurious, with walk-in tents furnished with beds and linens. On all of our camping adventures, we work very hard to bring you the tastiest, most varied camp meals you could ever imagine. When you’re on one of our European country rambles, you enjoy sumptuous picnics with wine as well as memorable meals in fine restaurants and local bistros, and at night you sleep in cozy, charming inns.

Private Trips! Enjoy your own private departure just for your family and friends by taking over a departure of one of our scheduled trips or by selecting one of our Independent Journeys (see page 114). It’s a great way to travel with your kids, celebrate an important birthday, mark an anniversary, or enjoy a reunion with cherished friends! We have decades of experience in arranging private journeys, including wildlife safaris in Africa, treks in the Himalayas, and active natural history cruises in the Galápagos. We Help You Choose Your Trip, and We Handle All Your Travel Details At Wilderness Travel, our Area Managers specialize in a particular part of the world and they possess a wealth of knowledge about our destinations. That means they can answer your questions frankly and promptly and help you choose the trip that’s right for you. The Detailed Daily Itinerary for each trip provides helpful preparation information, and we are happy to put you in contact with previous trip members who have been on the trip you’re interested in so you can ask them about their experience. When you sign up, which you can do by phone with a credit card deposit, the Area Manager is usually your single point of contact, taking care of trip details, trip extensions, and providing you with specifics on everything from clothing to visas to immunizations. We also provide a reading list to spark your imagination for the journey ahead. In short, we take care of every detail so you can just pack your bag and set off on the adventure of a lifetime. In the field, this high level of service continues in the good hands of our world-class Trip Leaders.

We Travel Responsibly As Wilderness Travel plays its small part in the world’s largest industry—tourism—we are sensitive to the effects of travel on the places we visit. Our commitment to ecologically responsible, low-impact tourism goes back a very long time, and we actively support conservation and cultural groups such as the Wildlife Conservation Society, Charles Darwin Foundation, the American Himalayan Foundation, and many other organizations. We firmly believe that responsible tourism can be an extraordinary tool to connect people across borders and cultures.

Your Safety Is Our Most Important Charge Our Trip Leaders and support staff take the utmost care with every aspect of your trip, from altitude-related concerns to ensuring hygienic food preparation in camp. Of course, emergencies are extremely rare, but traveling with a company as experienced as we are adds a strong element of safety and security to your journey.
